Would you turn down $40,000? See what happened after one contestant rejected a huge jackpot on Tipping Point!

How many of us have dreamed of that heart-stopping moment on a game show, when the host leans in and offers you a life-changing sum of money? For most, it’s the stuff of fantasy. But for 72-year-old John, an Aussie contestant on Channel Nine’s Tipping Point, that dream became a reality—and then took a twist that had everyone on the edge of their seats!

Let’s set the scene: John had already played a blinder, banking a tidy $4,200 and making it all the way to the show’s nail-biting endgame, known as Jackpot Temptation. The stakes were high, with a $20,000 jackpot glimmering on the horizon. But just as John was weighing up his options, host Todd Woodbridge decided to up the ante in spectacular fashion.

‘What would you say if I gave you one counter and increased the jackpot to $40,000?’ Todd asked, sending a ripple of excitement through the studio. Imagine it—one shot, double the money, but with a catch: John would have to risk his hard-earned $4,200 for a single chance at the big prize.

Now, most of us would be tempted. After all, $40,000 could mean a new car, a dream holiday, or a serious boost to the retirement fund! But John, ever the cool customer, kept his wits about him. ‘The chance of one [counter]... it would have to fall 100 per cent in the right spot. So, no, I will sadly decline that,’ he said, his wife Helen cheering him on from the audience: ‘No, it’s too much of a risk!’

But Todd wasn’t done yet. Sensing the tension, he turned to Helen: ‘Helen, what would do it for you?’ Then, with a flourish, he made a final offer: three counters for the original $20,000 jackpot. The crowd held its breath as John accepted, and with his very first counter, Lady Luck smiled—he hit the jackpot!

The studio erupted in cheers, and Helen rushed the stage to celebrate with her husband. Talk about a feel-good moment!

This heartwarming win comes at a time when Tipping Point has been under the microscope, with some viewers questioning the fairness of the game. In April, eagle-eyed fans took to social media after noticing a counter seemingly move on its own during a previous episode, sparking wild theories about magnets and rigged machines.

Channel Nine, however, was quick to set the record straight: ‘There are absolutely no magnets involved,’ a spokesperson assured, explaining that the counters are made of wood and the movement was likely due to natural suction between the Perspex surfaces of the machine.

It’s a reminder that sometimes, what looks like a conspiracy is just a quirk of physics—and that, in the end, luck and good judgment are what really count on game shows like Tipping Point.

John’s story is a classic example of knowing when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. By trusting his instincts (and listening to Helen!), he walked away with a life-changing prize and a moment the whole family will never forget.

So, members, we want to hear from you! Would you have taken the $40,000 risk, or played it safe like John? Have you ever had to make a big decision under pressure? And what would you do with a $20,000 windfall? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments below—let’s get the conversation started!

Key Takeaways

  • Contestant John, aged 72, stunned viewers on Tipping Point Australia when he rejected a $40,000 jackpot offer, preferring to play it safe rather than risk his banked $4,200.
  • After turning down the $40,000 temptation, John accepted a second offer of three counters for a shot at $20,000—and ended up winning the $20,000 jackpot on his first try, to massive cheers from the audience.
  • Channel Nine has recently denied accusations that Tipping Point is rigged, following fans' claims that a counter moved mysteriously on the game board, insisting there are 'absolutely no magnets involved'.
  • Viewers remain divided on social media about the fairness of the game, with some suggesting natural suction between Perspex surfaces explains the unusual counter movements, rather than foul play.

And if you’re a fan of game shows, keep your eyes peeled—sometimes, the most exciting moments come when you least expect them.

I saw this episode, and he was in a really good position.

We have watched tipping point from the start and actually watching it now.
We have often asked is it rigged !!

My daughters have applied to go on the show and also added my name .

If I managed to get on it and made it to the end if the ammount was more than $4000 I would take that and not play temptation

For those who think the machine is subject to magnetic influences are gooses. The sound of a metal being dropped or struck is different, according to its composition, is called a "sonorous property".

All metals and alloys have have their own unique sound. The sound of the metal discs in the Tipping Point machine are indicative of aluminium - nothing else. Which is non magnetic.

However, I do have my doubts with the prevalence of "ambient drops". There is evidence that the machine's horizontal travel is adjustable.
