Woolworths worker discloses the unbelievable amount of hot cross buns the store sells each year - and other secrets!

At this point, we all are probably aware that hot cross buns are a staple in everyone’s Easter treats but we certainly weren’t expecting them to be this popular…

One Woolworths worker divulged exactly how many of the Easter treats the supermarket giant sells each year and let’s just say that it made our jaws drop.

The Sydney-based employee, Liam Kirley, who also runs Woolies’ TikTok, shared five secrets about the retailer’s beloved hot cross buns.

He begins by explaining that the reason why they start selling the treats in December (and not around April) is because they are ‘far too good to wait’.

“We sold over two million in the first week so we know you love them,” he mentioned.

And if you thought that amount was an awful lot, he disclosed that Woolies sells about five Airbus A380s worth of hot cross buns in just one year.

“Which is about 2865 tonnes,” Liam explained.

For some more clarity, the Airbus A380 is the largest passenger airliner. Isn’t that crazy?

“Fact number three: our most popular month is April. No surprises there,” Liam continued.

He also revealed some of the limited-edition offerings including Banana and Caramel, Apple and Cinnamon, and Mocha.

Lastly, he teased viewers with fact number five saying: “Final fact. The crosses at the top are made of… that’s a secret, not telling you!”

Liam’s TikTok video attracted plenty of attention from Woolworths fans and hot cross bun lovers, with the majority raving about the limited-edition flavours.

“Banana and caramel had my heart!” one user wrote alongside a heart emoji.

“I have tried the apple and cinnamon and it is still my favourite.” said another.

While a third commented: “The mocha ones were the best!”

Although Liam didn’t reveal the secret ingredient that we were all dying to know, he did share how the chain creates its popular fruit buns in a separate TikTok video.

“Firstly, we mix the dough for a few minutes,” he started the clip. “Then we add our fruit: sultanas.”

He said that once the dough is mixed, the bakers divide it into portions and leave them to rest for about 40 minutes.

Once the timer goes off, they proceed by adding the ‘famous’ crosses on top.

“We place the perfect buns into the oven for a full 20 minutes. Then, we immediately glaze them for a shining polish.”

This behind the scenes video amassed over 104,000 views, with users flooding the comments to share their love for Woolies’ delicacies.

“Woolies has the best bakery not going to lie.” exclaimed one shopper.

“My mouth is drooling! This is why Woolies is my favourite place to shop for food!” chimed another.

While a third revealed: “I have bought 30 bags of those (hot cross buns) this month.”

I have tried hot cross buns from various places this year and Woolies are the worst ones I have ever had. Both their traditional nd brioche buns. Just awful

I totally refuse to eat hot cross buns until near Easter - Hubs eats them from Christmas eve or whenever they first sell. He is definitely contributing to the 2865 tonne sales

I'm old school enough to believe that the traditional fruit buns are the only ones for Easter. All the other flavours could be had (minus the crosses) at any other time of the year.:)
