Woolworths Supermarket Leaves Customers Baffled With Bizarre Broccoli Display: Is This Really How We're Selling Broccoli Now?
- Replies 5
With the recent produce shortages and price increases, you'd think supermarkets would be trying to make their displays more appealing. But one Woolworths store took a different route, and social media users are not sure what to make of it.
This is after one Woolies shopper shared an image of an unusual sight at his local store on Reddit, showing how the individual broccoli heads had been placed in individual holes in a wall, a display typically reserved for different varieties of lettuce, usually available at Woolworths.
“What in the heck is this broccoli display, Woolworths?” the Reddit user wrote alongside the image.
This bizarre display has left many social media users amused and were quick to share their theories as to why the broccoli had been displayed that way.
“It’s whack-a-broc, you gotta hit the broccoli, and then it’ll retreat into its little hole,” one Reddit user suggested, referencing a popular arcade game called “Whack-A-Mole”.
Another said: “If you’re charging $7.90 per kilo for broccoli, then you gotta make it look fancy.”

A couple of users seemed to solve the mystery with one theory.
“They're using broccoli to fill the holes because they can’t get lettuce,” a user commented.
A Woolworths employee revealed that given the current lettuce shortage in some Woolworths stores nationally, staff have decided to use it to display broccoli instead.
“Typically, the Oakleaf lettuce variety is stored in these, but recently there has been a severe shortage in lettuce.”
“So for fear of the store looking empty (and a lack of a supervisor), your fresh food people have substituted lettuce for broccoli! We seriously need a pay rise. Seriously.” The Woolworths employee said.
A national lettuce shortage caused by east-coast floods and icy weather has sent prices through the roof.
In recent weeks, some supermarkets have charged up to $12 for a head of iceberg lettuce.
As an alternative, even major fast-food chain KFC has begun to use cabbage in their burgers.
While some users speculated that the broccoli was being used to fill the lettuce holes due to the current lettuce shortage, a Woolworths spokesperson has put the question to rest, sharing the reason behind the display.
“Our store teams may occasionally move products to different locations within their stores,” the spokesman said.
Others have used the post as an opportunity to implore shoppers to stop damaging broccoli in stores, as there has been an increase in reports of customers removing the stalks from the vegetable to reduce the weight and cost.

“Side note, to the people breaking off stems of broccoli, stop that s***. Grate it up and put in spaghetti,” one Reddit user said.
