Woolworths shopper outraged after discovering UNUSUAL substitute for grocery staple

Have you ever ordered something online, only to have the retailer substitute a completely different item? It's annoying, especially when the substitution is for something significantly different from what you ordered.

This is the exact predicament that one Woolworths customer faced after receiving a ‘bizarre’ substitution for a grocery staple in his online order.

Sharing his experience on TikTok, the man claimed that he discovered two boxes of sparkling water instead of cartons of milk in his grocery delivery this week.

The customer says in the video: 'So I did the weekly grocery shop with an online order because I can't be bothered to go anywhere and I got all the usual stuff.'

The man then shares how disappointed he was after the dairy product was missing from his purchase, saying that it was 'what he needed the most.'

'If they're out of stock at a store they just replace whatever you want with the next best thing so if you order one type of milk, you probably get another one,' he continues.

The shot shifts to a shopping bag on the floor holding two boxes of Mount Franklin flavoured sparkling water.

The customer explains: ‘I didn't expect to get f***ing 20 cans of sparkling water to replace milk!’

He then pops a can of sparkling water open and pours it over a bowl of cereal.

‘This is on you, Woolworths,’ he says as he tastes and spits out a spoonful of the morning snack.

In the caption, the shopper demands an explanation from Woolies, joking that he is willing to sponsor Mount Franklin for the new cereal innovation.

It should be noted that grocery retailers have a policy regarding online orders for out-of-stock items, stating that staff members are expected to do their 'best to provide a suitable alternative of equal or higher value.’

A statement on Woolworths' website read: 'This is at no extra cost to you, and you'll only be charged the price of the original item.'

The retailer, however, promises to refund customers if no suitable substitute is available when an item is out of stock.

A Woolworths spokesperson addressed the unusual milk replacement and admitted that employees do not always get it right.

'We have a dedicated team of personal shoppers who work hard to handpick thousands of online orders to the highest standard every day,' the spokesperson explained.

'While our teams work hard to provide a great experience every time, we don't always get substitutions right.'

'We encourage customers to contact us directly should something be amiss with their order so we can rectify it as quickly as possible.'

Online shopping may offer comfort to those who are unable to physically shop for their essentials, but it can't be denied that it may also cause some inconveniences. Just remember: each time you encounter issues with your grocery delivery, don't hesitate to contact your local store to report the problem.

When you shop online at Coles or Woolies you click on " no substitutes"

I luckily have had no problems with any subsitutes that Woolies has supplied.. But i do check straight away so that if there is one that i am not happy with i can let them know.... Or with things that i would only like a particular product i click no Substitues... Easy

Despite the excuse from the WW spokesperson l cannot see how a picker could mistakenly put bottled water into an order instead of milk. I would be interested to see what was on the sales docket that came with the delivery; milk or bottled water!
Any substitutions WW have made to our orders have meant we received a larger quantity of a product for the lesser price. Thankyou WW's.
