Woolworths releases limited-edition $2 and $1 coins inspired by Commonwealth Games – here's how you can get them!

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are drawing near, with the opening ceremony scheduled to take place next week.

The multi-sports event, akin to our own mini Olympics, begins on Thursday, July 28, and ends on Monday, August 8.

Given that we currently sit atop the all-time medals table with a staggering 2415 medals across gold, silver, and bronze, amassed since the Commonwealth Games began in 1930, Australia is expected to perform admirably as a Commonwealth nation.

And if we managed to win at least 66 gold medals at the competitions in Birmingham, Australia will become the first country in the Commonwealth to accumulate 1000 gold medals overall!

Our friends over at Woolworths are joining us in celebration as the supermarket giant releases a set of limited-edition coins in partnership with the Royal Australian Mint.

The limited-edition $2 and $1 coins feature a variety of sports in which Australia will compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, as well as designs and themes associated with the games.

Three special $2 coins have been minted with the letters A, U, and S on them and there are also additional four $1 coins that are only available in specialised collectors albums.

Andrew Hicks, the Chief Marketing Officer for Woolworths, officially announced the news in a statement, saying: 'As The Fresh Food People, we're proud to celebrate the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games and all the Australian athletes competing.'

'We have a long history of recognising Australia's rich sporting culture with our customers, and these coins are another great way for them to show their support as the team goes for gold in Birmingham.'

The Royal Australian Mint often makes limited-edition coins for big sporting events. Often, they do this in partnership with Woolworths, which gives the coins to customers at checkout.

There were recently special coins released featuring characters from The Wiggles, who are among the most popular children's entertainers in the world.

At this point, you might be wondering, how do you get your hands on the Commonwealth Games coins?

The coins have already been made available at Woolworths locations nationwide. That means they could show up randomly in your change when you shop. (Better check your wallet!)

At the checkout, you can simply present a receipt to redeem your $2 coin as part of your change. There's no minimum amount you have to spend!

As for the $1 coins, they will be up for grabs in coin collectors' albums, which will be sold exclusively in Woolies stores for the price of $15.

People sell these coins on eBay for crazy amounts of money later, so you might want to pick up a few the next time you go shopping, folks!

You could, of course, just go straight to the Royal Mint, which also has an online store where you can directly purchase the coins.

Aside from the seven coins available at Woolies, the Mint also has a limited edition aluminium-bronze $1 coin, a silver $1 coin, and a gold 50c coin.

The coins retail for far higher than their face value. For example, the silver coin is worth a whopping $80! But because they are not in circulation, these coins could be worth so much more in the future.

Don't let the opportunity pass you by, members! If you have the time to have a quick shop, do so because you might just get lucky.

So what do you think, folks? See you in Woolies then?

Please note: We accidentally referred to the $2 coins as 'complimentary' in a previous version of the article. Sorry about that members - just to clarify, you can opt to receive a special $2 coin as part of your change.
