Woolworths launches lamington pack with modern twist: ‘I think they’ve nailed these’

Australia's beloved lamington has been given a modern makeover by Woolworths, and the response from customers has been nothing short of love.

The supermarket giant's limited-edition products have been flying off the shelves since their launch earlier this month, causing a stir on social media and prompting a rush of Aussies to their local Woolworths in search of these revamped treats.

The Cafe-style Lamingtons pack, priced at $16, includes eight lamingtons with a unique twist on the traditional recipe.

The assortment includes two 'classic' lamingtons with raspberry and rosella jam, two 'fairy bread' lamingtons with a 'toasted' buttercream filling, two 'lemon curd' lamingtons with a white chocolate coating, and two 'choc hazelnut' lamingtons with a milk chocolate flake coating.

This works out to be $2 per piece for a taste of nostalgia with a contemporary spin.

Chris Chase, Woolworths’ Bakery Category Manager, said the lamingtons 'bring our customers a delightful fusion of traditional flavours with a modern twist’.

'Since launching only two weeks ago, they are already proving to be a hit, with flavours like lemon curd and fairy bread,’ he added.

‘We’ve been really focused on improving our bakery offering by using great quality ingredients and investing in recipe development to create treats our customers will love.'

‘Aussies love lamingtons, and this latest addition means customers can indulge in the cafe experience at great value right at home.’

The lamingtons have been praised by food bloggers and customers alike.

On social media, food blogger Nick Vavitis declared the lamingtons were well worth the buzz and particularly enjoyed one flavour.

‘I think they’ve nailed these. This is not overrated,’ he remarked.

‘The lemon with the coconut on the outside (is a) really, really good combo. If you like lemon, and you like that tangy lemon, that really zesty, tangy lemon, you’re going to love this. This ticks the box. (It’s) exactly what I want out of a lemon-flavoured thing—heaps and heaps of lemon flavour.’

Queensland woman Kara Hansen also gave the lamingtons a glowing review, especially the choc hazelnut version, which she described as 'the nicest cake I’ve ever had'.

‘These are actually a lot bigger than I thought they would be. Keep in mind, it was $16 for eight, so these are like $2 each. They smell so good,’ she said.

‘They are hands down worth every cent. Go get them, try them. Literally, I’m going to freeze these ones. I’m going to keep them forever. (They are) 11 out of 10. Woolies, you have blown my mind.’

The revamped lamingtons have even drawn comparisons to the offerings at a popular bakery in Sydney and Melbourne known for its innovative takes on the classic Australian dessert.

Food blogger Ange Eats noted the similarities in his video review, saying, 'These are definitely giving me Tokyo Lamington vibes…Look how good these look. They’re also really thick.'

Over the years, the humble lamington has seen many variations, from the addition of cream and jam fillings to the use of different flavours for the coating.

The new 'Cafe-style Lamingtons' from Woolworths are the latest in this line of evolution, offering a modern twist on the traditional favourite.

The popularity of these new lamingtons is a testament to Australians' enduring love for this iconic dessert.

It also highlights the potential for innovation in the bakery sector, as consumers increasingly seek out unique and novel food experiences.

So, whether you're a traditionalist who prefers the classic chocolate and coconut combination, or an adventurous foodie eager to try the new flavours, there's a lamington out there for you.

And if you haven't yet tried Woolworths' new offerings, what are you waiting for? You might want to give yourself some nostalgic treats!

I don't eat lamingtons because I can't eat "coconut". But my son loves them, and I know if my husband were still here, he would want me to buy them too. The price tag seems very reasonable as most place sell their cake/muffin/eta items for a lot more or in a smaller serve.

SDC why is there such a promotion of unhealthy sugar loaded food pretty much daily? These 'sometimes food's' are given a lot of advertising space and are competing against the articles of how to save $$. When people are struggling so much to pay their bills and purchase even basic foods these days this is quite a virtual slap in the face and separates those who have and those who don't. I'm wondering how diabetics feel about these life threatening sugary ads...
I am well aware it is a person's choice of what to spend their money on but people please be aware marketing excels in utilising enticing subliminal advertising for their own gain... and we like sheep...

I think they are a bit pricey.
I do like lamingtons but prefer the traditional with moch cream filling.
They freeze really well.
These sound different, but, too much to fork out just for the sake of novelty.

Oh yay! Twice as sick from SULPHITES for me and the family! (being sarcastic). Sulphites in the lamington mix and sulphites in the coconut - wish i could but NO THANKS!!!!

Why can't companies come up with a damn preservative that isn't going to make people sick for days to a week if they eat something - people like me and my family miss out on so much nice stuff because of a allergy/intolerance to Sulphites/Sulphates/Sulpha.
