One of the most frustrating parts of self-checkouts has always been trying to wrangle those bags that refuse to stay open.
You know the ones—floppy, stubborn, and definitely not helpful when you’re juggling a trolley full of shopping.
Well, Woolies has finally stepped up with a solution that’s about to make packing groceries way less stressful.
Say hello to Woolies’ brand-new reusable bag collection designed specifically to fix this annoying problem.
These aren’t just any bags—they click open and stay open while you pack, saving you from the awkward one-handed struggle and the endless wrestling match with your bags.
Inspired by iconic Aussie favourites, the collection features three fun designs: ‘Cockatoo & Wattle’, ‘Coffee & Finger Bun’, and ‘Famous Aussie Things’, which includes fairy bread, quokkas, and the hills hoist.
You’ll also spot famous Aussie landmarks like Cape Byron Lighthouse and the Bungle Bungles Purnululu National Park on the bags. Woolworths’ bag expert Rhonda Ma explained the idea behind the designs was to bring a bit of fun back to shopping.
‘We really wanted to bring a bit of fun to our latest bag design, celebrating what makes Australia special with classic Aussie icons and that 'if you know, you know' charm,’ she said.
'These bags are designed for life beyond the supermarket—think picnics, work commutes, or a day out at the beach—as they're functional and durable for everyday use.'
But the real game-changer is the new ‘Click & Stay’ feature. These bags have a clever mechanism at the top that clicks into place, keeping the bag wide open as you load your groceries—especially handy for self-checkout users or those using the Scan & Go option.
‘They solve a challenge for some shoppers who have a larger number of items in their basket to checkout: they click open and stay open, making packing even easier, which is a solution we know some of our customers using self-checkout and trailing Scan & Go have been asking for,’ Rhonda said.
Sydney mum Liz tested the bags and couldn’t recommend them enough. ‘I thought the bags were good and sturdy,’ she told Kidspot.
‘They are large, so the first time I used them I filled them up and then struggled carrying them back to the car—be warned! The click part is great. They held open and made packing the bags at the self checkout much easier than the floppy green bags and they are definitely stronger than the paper bags. The designs are nice, I liked the 'Aussie Icons' one!’
The bags are rolling out in stores throughout the week and retail for $4 each. If you’ve ever wrestled with a bag that won’t play nice at the checkout, these are definitely worth a try.
