This is the situation that one woman in the US found herself in when she went to pay a visit to her mother-in-law.
According to the original New York Post article, the woman was left blushing and completely baffled while cleaning out her in-law's cupboards after discovering a strange, phallic object.

"OK, we found 2 of these doily thingies while cleaning out my mother-in-law's house," she wrote on a Facebook post, alongside a photo of an upright item draped in a red and pink crochet slip.
"Please tell me this is not what we think it is. There has to be an innocent use for them like a candlestick cosy or something?" she added.
Naturally, the woman's amusing post drew the attention of thousands of fellow Facebook group members, prompting them to leave their own guesses and opinions on what the item could possibly be.
One man had an elaborate answer in the comments, saying: "It's a Phallus Flower from the Victorian era. They were worn by upper-class men to provide modesty while dressing with the valet."
Other users laughed at the joke and added their own quips. "Sometimes a guy just likes to feel fancy," one user wrote, while another added, "I feel like MIL had some adventures."
Meanwhile, a third user believed that the erotic-looking item was an "early day failed attempt at a condom," which prompted yet another wave of X-rated comments from the audience.
