Why is everyone raving about this ‘game-changing’ $10 Kmart kitchen item? Find out now!

There’s no denying that most of us love a delicious, fresh sushi roll.

The combination of lightly cooked rice, crunchy vegetables, and savoury fish is so appetising. And, of course, the wasabi and soy sauce combo only makes it that much better!

But making your own professional-looking sushi rolls at home can be quite tricky, especially for first-timers.

Thankfully, a budget-friendly kitchen tool has gone viral on social media, showing Aussies how to make the whole process much easier.

A mum from Brisbane, who goes by the TikTok handle @amummatoanother, shared her experience using a kitchen gadget she picked up from Kmart.

The $10 Sushi Maker was the highlight of her kitchenware haul, and she said that it did not fail to impress her!

'Didn't disappoint! So easy to use,' she wrote in her video.

In the footage, the mum can be seen stuffing the inner tube of the sushi maker with rice, crumbed chicken, carrot, and mayonnaise.

Then, she wraps it all up in a piece of seaweed and closes the gadget with a lever. By pushing the lever down, the contraption makes the sushi roll perfectly compact and consistent.

When the newly-made sushi roll comes out of the machine, she just has to open it up and wrap the rolls in a second piece of seaweed. Voila – a delicious sushi meal is served!

'And my kids thought it was hilarious watching the rice roll come out,’ the mum continued.

The video went viral on social media, receiving over 1.6 million views and hundreds of comments from users who can't wait to get their hands on the kitchen item.

One user wrote: 'Me running to use mine that's still in the box.’

'I'm upset now that I went to Kmart yesterday and walked in and out. I need this!' another said.

A third chimed in: ‘Thanks! Now I know how to use it. Bought it in November, but it’s still in the cupboard.’

It should be noted that we previously covered a story about this ‘game-changing’ item. And while it wasn’t as popular as it is now back then, the $10 Kmart buy was hailed as one of the best kitchen items in the collection at the time.

Other users praised the contraption and shared their advice to make the whole sushi-making process easier.

'You did amazing for your first try!' one person wrote, adding: 'Try leaving the cap on at the end when you twist to compress it a little more.'

‘It looks kinda demented, not gonna lie, but at least it works,’ another pointed out.

Some less impressed people thought that making real sushi doesn't require a machine.

One disappointed user wrote: ‘If you aren’t going to do it properly, don’t do it at all.’

‘This looks harder than just doing it properly,’ another comment read.

Key Takeaways
  • A Brisbane mother shared her experience using a $10 Kmart kitchen item, the sushi maker, on TikTok.
  • The video showed how she easily made sushi using the Kmart sushi maker and received praise from viewers.
  • Some social media users shared their advice on using the sushi maker or expressed their desire to purchase the item.
  • However, not everyone agreed with using the contraption, with some saying sushi should only be made the traditional way.

We here at the SDC understand that whilst a $10 sushi maker might seem like the best option for some, it isn't accessible to others.

With that in mind, we recommend our members try using bamboo mats (which will only set you back at $2) from Coles or Woolworths for rolling your homemade sushi instead.

Just make sure to put cling wrap over it while using it to roll sushi so the rice nor any food residue sticks on the bamboo mat.

Below is a video demonstrating how you can use them when preparing sushi:

So, there you have it, members! Whether you opt for the traditional bamboo mats or the popular Kmart sushi maker, we hope you enjoy creating delicious homemade sushi to share with family and friends!

Another kitchen gadget. Just what my kitchen needs.

I'm already thinking outside the that Old Box and thinking recipes like Salmon Croquettes, Mashed Potato and/or Swett Potato Croquettes even filled with some cheese or some meat sauce and pushed out onto bread crumbs, Panko crumbs, even sweet treats using this tool. Actually, the recipe list is growing in my head.
