Why is everyone in South Australia flocking to the Royal Adelaide Show? Should you join them?

It’s that time of year again—when the unmistakable scent of hot cinnamon donuts, the distant squeals from thrill rides, and the sight of prize-winning pumpkins signal the return of the Royal Adelaide Show!

If you’re anywhere near Wayville, you’ll soon notice the buzz as hundreds of thousands of South Australians prepare to descend on the showgrounds for one of the state’s most beloved annual traditions.

This year, organisers are expecting a whopping 400,000 visitors to pass through the gates.

And with good reason! The 2024 Royal Adelaide Show is pulling out all the stops, with a mix of classic favourites and exciting new attractions.

The star of the show this year is the Skyflyer XXL—a jaw-dropping ride that soars 60 metres into the sky.

To put that in perspective, it’s almost twice the height of the iconic Ferris wheel! The Skyflyer XXL is so tall, it actually needed the green light from aviation authorities before it could be set up.

Jamie Pickett from Skyflyer XXL boasts, ‘I think you’re going to be able to see Glenelg from the top of this tower right here at Wayville.’ If you’re feeling brave, this is your chance to see Adelaide from a whole new angle!

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Royal Adelaide Show without the classic experiences we all know and love.

Expect all the showbags, wood-chopping, animal displays, and mouth-watering food stalls that have delighted generations.

This year, there’s an extra treat for families and grandkids: an expanded range of Bluey-themed attractions. Whether you’re a fan yourself or you’re bringing along little ones, Bluey is sure to be a hit.

Despite some tough times for our farmers, the agricultural heart of the show is beating stronger than ever.

There’s been a 14% increase in agricultural competitors this year—a record for recent years.

Jordan Philp from the Royal Adelaide Show says, ‘Our farmers are really keen to get back to the city and reconnect with people that they haven’t seen in a long time.’

So, if you love a good sheepdog trial or want to marvel at the best produce South Australia has to offer, you’re in for a treat.

It takes a small army to bring the show to life. In the lead-up to opening day, around 10,000 staff and volunteers are hard at work, making sure everything runs smoothly. And who’s keeping them fuelled?

The wonderful Country Women’s Association (CWA), of course! Evelyn Dyer from the CWA says, ‘We give as much of a homely atmosphere as we can. And we give all home-cooked meals… and it’s just lovely to have that service for people.’ If you’ve ever tasted a CWA scone, you know the volunteers are in for a treat.

With so many people heading to Wayville, a little planning goes a long way. Due to partial tramline closures, buses will be replacing tram services for the duration of the show.

But don’t worry—shuttle services will be running from designated city UParks, and you can snag a special parking rate of just $8.

So, whether you’re coming from the suburbs or the city, getting to the show should be a breeze if you plan ahead.
