Why is everyone buzzing about this AFL-inspired bun from a local bakery?
Australian Football League (AFL) fans are a passionate bunch, especially regarding their favourite teams being on the receiving end of a 'wrong call' from the umpires.
A perfect example of this can be found in the match between the Adelaide Crows and Sydney Swans this past weekend, which resulted in a fair amount of disappointment from the Adelaide side following a series of mistakes made by the goal umpires.
The Crows lost the game by one point, eventually losing their place in the finals. Understandably, Adelaide Crows supporters weren't too happy about this, and a local bakery has taken matters into their own hands with some sweet revenge.
Brighton Jetty Bakery has created the Thief's Bun, with white fondant down the middle to represent the goal post and a small fondant football attached to the side of the finger bun.
The bakery posted their new offering on social media with the caption: ‘Introducing the “Thief's Bun”, if you review this closely, you'll notice the decoration is actually not even close to touching the bun itself. Available now for the cost of your whole season.’
The post received positive feedback from internet users, with one of them asking: ‘Is it salty? Truth be told, definitely a robbery.’
Another user wrote, ‘I’m going to cry while eating this.’
‘Well done!!! Love this,’ a third comment said.
A reporter from a news outlet went to the bakery to see it for himself.
‘This is how Adelaide deals with controversy. We are eating our feelings away after the Crows were denied what should have been their match-winning goal on Saturday night’s game,’ the reporter stated.
Despite the less-than-savoury situation, Adelaide Crows Captain Jordan Dawson has urged Adelaide's people to go easy on the goal umpire.
'We also don't want that umpire to feel like he has cost us the year,' said Dawson. 'We know there have been plenty of games where we probably should have won and have been in these positions that we have lost and cost ourselves through our own error.'
Their defeat cost them a place in the AFL finals, continuing their drought since 2018.
‘That is what the technology has been brought in for, to use in cases and scenarios like that where the decision, the umpire is not sure,’ Dawson said.
‘He obviously thought it was a point, and he stuck with the decision...But it’s just one of those things.’
Despite their loss, the Crows end their season tied for fourth on the ladder with the West Coast Eagles.
