Why did Jimmy Barnes suddenly cancel his By The C show?

Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes had to make the difficult decision to pull out of a highly anticipated headlining performance at Torquay's By The C Music Festival last weekend due to a frightening health scare.

The 67-year-old frontman, known for his energetic performances and powerful vocals, was hospitalised and undergoing treatment for this serious lung infection.

Barnes, a staple of the Australian music scene for decades, took to social media to apologise for the last-minute announcement.

'I know a lot of people travel a long way for this gig, so I’m really sorry that I won’t be able to see you in Torquay,' Barnes said in a statement. 'This infection has knocked me for six, so there’s no chance that the doctors will let me out of bed for the next few days.’

This cancellation comes on the heels of Barnes' earlier announcement that he could not travel to New Caledonia for the Rock The Boat 2023 cruise concert due to the same health issue.

'I’m sorry to let you know that I’ve been receiving intravenous antibiotics over the last 36 hours to treat bacterial pneumonia,' he shared last week.

Bacterial pneumonia is a serious condition that causes inflammation in the lungs following an infection. The air sacs in the lungs get infected and fill up with fluid, leading to coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing.

If not treated promptly, it can lead to complications such as respiratory failure, sepsis, lung abscess, and even death.

Despite Barnes' absence, the show must go on. His daughter, Mahalia Barnes, and other special guests stepped in to fill his shoes on the Rock The Boat cruise.

Mahalia promised fans a 'treat' despite her dad’s unfortunate absence.

'I can’t thank you all enough for your care, concern and support through this time, we are all so grateful. I look forward to singing for you all…I promise it’ll be a show to make Dad proud.,' she said.

A surge of heartfelt good wishes and supportive messages poured in from fans on social media.

‘Your health is the priority, if they are real fans, they'll understand. Get well soon,’ one fan wrote.

‘I’m so sorry to hear you haven’t recovered yet. I hope you’re okay,’ another commented.

‘Stay in bed and get strong, Jimmy. Your family is brilliant to take the reins and play for you,’ a third person said.

This health scare is not the first for Barnes. Earlier this year, he was forced to take months of bed rest following emergency hip surgery. The operation was necessitated by years of pain caused by his energetic stage performances.

'I’ve had niggling back and hip issues for years, but things suddenly got a lot worse over the last few weeks, and I’m now in constant and severe pain,' he shared at the time.

Barnes' commitment to fans is evident in his reluctance to cancel shows. However, his current health situation underscores the importance of prioritising one's health.

I’ve seen him quite a few times. I’ve always regretted not being in Australia for the Chisel years, we came in 1986. But I did finally get to see the band live at A day on the Green - in torrential rain! But it was worth it lol. I’ve also met his son David Cambell, lovely guy.

I remember seeing Cold Chisel one night in a relatively small pub in Toorak....it was about midnight and the place was rocking even before they hit the stage....and when they did they took the whole atmosphere up to a completely new experience....it was not the largest venue and quite honestly we all thought that the roof would lift off it was so loud and Jimmy was in his element and the band rocked every single person in that room to another level that you could never imagine ever happening to your body or soul. An absolute awesome experience that I'll never forget.

Best wishes Barnesy.
