Who knew you could turn $1.75 placemats into a designer-looking faux plant display? This home stylist shows us how!

We all want our homes to look their best. After all, first impressions are important. Whether you’re trying to sell your home or just want to make it look nice for yourself and your family, our home aesthetic matters. But what if your home is lacking in the greenery department? Well, keeping houseplants may be the answer!

Sure, they've been around forever, but these days, more and more people are turning to houseplants to step up their home aesthetic. And it's not hard to see why, not only do plants add a touch of greenery to your space, but they can also help purify the air and boost your mood.

While keeping them has a number of benefits, it can't be denied that houseplants can be a hassle to maintain as different species require different care.

But, don't fret, folks! If you're looking to add a 'touch of nature' to your home without having to commit to taking care of live plants, then we've got good news for you!

An inventive home decorator has recently revealed her secret for creating a stylish imitation palm leaf planter using budget-friendly placemats from Kmart.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, Look What I Found, Brisbane stylist Michelle Rhodes demonstrated the 'easy' process of how to build the chic décor piece she claims is ideal for any entryway.

'I've noticed in some homeware stores some gorgeous looking natural style palm leaves but they were always so expensive, so I thought I'd have a go at making some myself,' the stylist wrote in the caption of her video.

The stylist also said that the materials used are easily-accessible — all you need are several woven placemats from Kmart costing $1.75 a piece, a sizable vase, and an $8.99 bundle of bamboo sticks from Bunnings.

Michelle began the process by tracing the outline of a leaf from an imitation banana leaf plant before cutting out the back of the mat to form the shape.

She remarked that it was difficult to find a material for the leaves that had a ‘natural-looking textur’ while being sturdy enough to be fastened to her stems, saying that she was lucky to have discovered the Kmart item.

'The Kmart natural round placemats ticked all of the above and were only $1.75 each,' she explained.

'Then I discovered some bamboo cane bunches at Bunnings in all different sizes and widths which were perfect for what I needed.'

Michelle then used a wool needle and a neutral-coloured string to fasten the ‘leaf placemats’ into the poles, noting that she used three stitches to secure each of them.

Finally, she placed the leaf stems in a large vase — which she painted white to complement the colour — before displaying it in her living room.

Michelle said: 'I was truly amazed at how well they turned out and I love them in my entryway.'

The clip has gone viral on Instagram, amassing more than 842,00 views and comments from stunned users who praised the stylist for her inventive trick.

One user wrote: 'One of my favourite hacks. I've been making these for a couple of years now out of placemats from the op shop.'

Others pointed out that the tip can also help those who are looking to decorate their homes save money as the original plant imitation furnishings are retailed at a much higher price.

'Love this hack, they are $39.95 each in most shops, well done,' one person claimed.

Another added: 'I have also seen them in home wear shops but could not justify the price. Thanks, this is a great hack that I might be doing.'

While imitation house plants do not give the same air purifying benefits as actual plants, sprucing up your home's interior with them is a great way to add some colour without taking the time to care for a living plant.

So, there you have it, folks! Will you be giving this tip a go? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! Also, for those looking for tips on keeping their flower bouquets fresh for a longer period, we recommend checking out this article.

At first glance I thought these were bits of brown placemat tied to sticks.

I was right. Where are the promised "gorgeous looking natural style palm leaves" please?
