Who knew dishwashing liquid could be so versatile? Here are 13 unexpected ways to use it

Dishwashing liquid is the one cleaning product that beats all others. Not only is it incredibly versatile and cost-effective – you only need a small amount to go a long way – but you can even combine it with vinegar to make your own powerful DIY cleaner!

Here are 13 things you can clean with dishwashing liquid.

Floor:

According to the consumer group CHOICE, most floor cleaners are ‘no better at cleaning than plain water’.

What you can do instead is drizzle a bit of dishwashing liquid in your mop bucket, and then fill it with hot water for an effective cleaning solution.

Shower screens:

Apply some dishwashing liquid directly to a sponge or gentle scourer, and then lather up and scrub away for a fog-free shower display and sparkling surfaces in the bathroom. Don’t forget to give everything a rinse or wipe it down afterwards!

Bathroom:

You can clean most of the bathroom using dishwashing liquid, from the tiles to the bath, and even the toilet! Some surfaces (like countertops) need dusting or rinsing first before cleaning though.

Windows and mirrors:

We’ve written past articles about the wonders that dishwashing liquid can do to mirrors and windows, but that’s only because it is so effective in maintaining glass surfaces’ shine!

To clean your windows and mirrors, use a cloth and about 2 squirts of dishwashing liquid mixed in a bucket of water. Follow it up with a squeegee for a streak-free finish.

Clothing stains:

Dishwashing liquid contains a degreaser so it can get oil off your kitchen wares. This means it can come in handy when removing oil stains from your clothes! Pre-treat the stained area by applying a drop or two and rubbing it in with your fingers. Leave for 5 to 10 minutes and wash as normal.

Driveway stains:

Yes, even oil stains in the garage or your driveway can be removed using dishwashing liquid. Just drizzle some on the stain, scrub and then rinse.

Kitchen sink (steel):

Use soapy water and a bit of antibacterial spray to make sure you’re giving your kitchen sink a good clean every day.

For a deeper clean, drizzle dishwashing liquid across the sink and scatter bicarb soda on top. Give it a good scrub and then rinse off the grime with water.

Kitchen cupboards:

Prepare a bowl of soapy water and dip your cloth into it to clean greasy, grimy kitchen cupboards and shelves. Or you can add a drop of dish soap to your cloth and wipe down the surfaces for a quick clean.

Stone benchtops:

If you have stone benchtops, refrain from using bleach, vinegar, or bicarb soda because stone is porous. These ingredients can damage the surface and discolour your benchtops.

What you can do instead is clean it with a mix of dishwashing liquid and water. Measure according to the size of your benchtops and pour the mixture into a spray bottle for easy cleaning. Spritz it on the surface and wipe it away with a towel.

Drains:

Speaking of kitchen sinks, they can get pretty smelly after a while. Remove this by drizzling a bit of dishwashing liquid down the sinkhole and following it up immediately with hot water. That said, refrain from using boiling water especially if your pipes are made with PVC.

Thanks to the degreaser in dishwashing liquids, the oil and grease build-up inside your drain will slowly break down.

Blinds:

These can be quite troublesome to clean…at first glance.

In truth, the process of cleaning blinds is simple. Dust them off first, then wipe them down with warm soapy water and cloth.

Outdoor furniture:

You’ll probably need a handful of cleaning cloths to clean your outdoor furniture, given that they’ve been sitting outside all this time.

You can use a bucket of soapy water and vinegar for a deeper clean, and rinse it with clean water afterwards.

Jewellery:

Lastly, just add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to warm water and soak your jewellery in it for five minutes. Afterwards, rinse them off and dry them with a soft cloth. If your jewellery needs a bit more cleaning, use a soft toothbrush and gently scrub off the grime and dust. Polish it off with a soft cloth and you’re good to go!
Key Takeaways
  • Dishwashing liquid is versatile, inexpensive, and useful for cleaning.
  • It can be combined with vinegar for a DIY cleaner that can be added to a spray bottle or refillable dish wand.
  • Apart from dishes, dishwashing liquid can also be used to clean windows, mirrors, floors, bathroom furnishings, kitchen cupboards, stone benches, sinks, outdoor furniture, fan blades and jewellery.
  • For tougher dirt, dishwashing liquid can be used with vinegar for a heavy-duty clean.
