For one Rotorua couple, their dream wedding among Hobbit holes turned into something straight out of Middle-earth itself. What began as a simple ceremony on a misty Monday afternoon quickly became a moment of disbelief and delight.
No one could have guessed who would appear next among the green hills of the Shire.
An unexpected guest in the Shire
Sharik and Jessica Burgess-Stride were exchanging vows at the famous Hobbiton Movie Set when an unexpected guest appeared—Hollywood actor Elijah Wood, best known for playing Frodo Baggins.
The star, in New Zealand for the Armageddon Expo, happened to be touring the set when he spotted the couple’s Lord of the Rings-themed celebration and decided to say hello.
‘Oh my God!’ the newlyweds gasped as the actor approached. Loud cheers and laughter followed, with guests calling out in disbelief.
One amused onlooker even shouted, ‘He’s smaller than I thought!’
Sharik later said, ‘At first I thought “nah, that’s not him”—then “oh s--t, it IS him!”’ Wood shook their hands, offered a quick ‘congratulations’, and posed for a few photos before continuing his tour with a group of visitors.
A lifelong fan’s dream come true
The couple said they had just finished signing their wedding papers when the star began walking down the aisle between guests.
‘You know the saying that when it rains on your wedding day, it’s a sign of good luck? After this… we felt like it was definitely true,’ Sharik added.
Wood was overheard telling the pair, originally from Australia, ‘This is amazing, and everyone’s dressed as hobbits.’ The bride, groom, and guests were indeed in full costume, adding to the surreal magic of the moment.
Sharik, a lifelong Tolkien fan, had visited Hobbiton five times before and collected memorabilia ranging from maps to hand-carved props.
When he jokingly suggested holding the wedding there, Jessica immediately agreed—even though she had never been to the set herself.
Their vows included references to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and nearly every guest joined in the fun by dressing for the occasion.
A first for Hobbiton weddings
According to Hobbiton’s general manager, Shayne Forrest, it was the first time a cast member had ever dropped in on a wedding at the site.
‘Elijah was back enjoying some time in Hobbiton but wasn’t aware there was a wedding happening until he saw it taking place in front of one of the bright yellow Hobbit Holes near Gandalf’s Cutting,’ he said.
‘When he saw the couple and their guests dressed as Hobbits, he knew it was a celebration he couldn’t miss.’
A moment that captured the world’s attention
The video of the encounter, shared on Hobbiton Tours’ official social media, has already attracted more than 19 million views.
Comments poured in from around the world. One fan joked, ‘I’d be like “you can never divorce me!!! Elijah Wood crashed our wedding!!!”’
Another laughed, ‘Why are they marrying in front of his house though? I’d be so p---ed if I was him!’
Others expressed surprise that weddings could even be held there, to which Hobbiton Tours replied, ‘We do more than a hundred weddings each year.’

A perfect ending to a storybook day
For the newlyweds, it was a day that couldn’t have been scripted better.
Despite the drizzle, the rain stopped just long enough for their vows—and for Frodo Baggins to make an unforgettable appearance.
In a world where chance encounters feel rare, this spontaneous moment between a Hollywood star and two Tolkien fans was proof that a bit of real-life magic still exists in the Shire.
