What did Buckingham Palace do with the Paddington bears left in tribute to the late Queen? Hint: It’s adorable.

If you’re familiar with the animated movie Paddington, you’ll probably remember the kind-hearted bear who was left at a train station with a note that said ‘Please look after this bear’. Well, the mild-mannered Paddington has now become an unofficial symbol of comfort for many following the Queen’s death.
Thousands of Paddington stuffed toys were left at the Palace gates and royal parks in tribute to the late Queen.

Now, it has been announced that Buckingham Palace will be donating the toys to children supported by Barnardo's charity. The Queen had been a patron of the charity since 1983, before handing over her responsibilities to Camilla in 2016. The Queen Consort, who is the president of Barnardo’s, posed with the adorable toys at Clarence House – 64 years to the day after the First Paddington book was published. How lovely!

Paddington first became associated with the Queen after a sketch of the both of them sharing tea was filmed for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

You can watch the video here:

The skit had been filmed in secrecy at Windsor Castle, which led people to leave the stuffed bears beside flower beds in Hyde Park and London’s Green Park. Aside from the Paddington stuffed toys, mourners also offered marmalade sandwiches – which is Paddington’s favourite snack – and left them in Royal Parks.

The park authorities urged people to stop, but the tributes continued. Prince William also said that he got ‘choked up’ after seeing so many Paddingtons, admitting that these are ‘the things you don’t expect that get to you’.

Recently, a spokesman from Buckingham Palace said that the teddy bears ‘are being well looked after at Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, and in the Royal Parks nursery in Hyde Park’.

An estimated 200 people volunteered to collect the toys from the makeshift memorials and loaded them onto wagons pulled by grey Shire horses.

Lynn Perry, Barnardo’s Chief Executive, said that the Queen was a patron of the charity for more than 30 years. She further shared that they ‘are honoured to be able to give homes to the teddies that people left in her memory. We promise to look after these bears who will be well loved, and bring joy to the children we support.’ Lynn Perry also thanked the Queen Consort for her support.

Tom Jarvis, a spokesperson from the Royal Parks, also shared that for over the past few weeks, they have been looking for a fitting and appropriate use for the hundreds of teddies left in their care. He said, ‘We are delighted they will now bring joy and comfort to children supported by Barnardo’s.’
