Staying informed about product recalls is important for your health and safety. That's why we want to alert you to a recent recall that may affect you.
An Australian food manufacturer has issued a recall of a popular spread because of an undeclared allergen – despite it being advertised as ‘gluten-free’.
A recall has been issued for a yeast spread due to the presence of an undeclared allergen. The product, OzEmite Yeast Spread Gluten Free, is being recalled by its manufacturer, Spring Gully Foods Pty Ltd, over fears that it could cause a severe allergic reaction if consumed.
According to the product description, OzEmite is ‘Gluten-free with no artificial colours or flavours’.
The ingredients in a 175g spread include: Yeast and Vegetable Extracts (41.8%), Maize Starch (1401), Maltodextrin, Water, Sugar, Yeast, Natural Caramel Colour (150a), Natural Colour (153), Food Acid (330), Niacin, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Folate.
The recall statement read: ‘Spring Gully Foods Pty Ltd is conducting a recall of OzEmite Yeast Spread Gluten Free (175g). The product has been available for sale at Woolworths in SA and WA; Drakes; independent food retailers, including IGA in SA.’
It also said that jars with a best-before date of 28/04/25 are affected.
FSANZ warned consumers who have a gluten intolerance or allergy to avoid consuming the product and return affected jars to the place of purchase for a full refund.
In a separate statement, Spring Gully issued an apology to their consumers. ‘We are truly sorry for any effect this recall may cause our customers. We thank you for your continued support, understanding and patience. The safety of our customers is our top priority,’ they said.
‘We have built an amazing community of loyal customers that enjoy and trust our products. With our customers front of mind, we inform you that OzEmite Yeast Spread Gluten Free 175g is under recall. The recall is effective immediately,’ they added.
‘Spring Gully Foods has a long history of producing safe, quality products for the Australian Market. We have built an amazing community of loyal customers that enjoy and trust our products.’
Spring Gully also stated that an issue with their ingredient supply had caused the problem but assured everyone that it did not extend to other products.
‘Due to an ingredient supply issue, there is gluten present in a batch that was recently manufactured,’ they told reporters.
‘Our routine quality checks detected the presence of gluten and allowed us to work quickly with SA Health and FSANZ to inform our customers. No other products made in our factory have been impacted by this incident. We apologise for the impact this may have on OzEmite customers.’
The food manufacturer also stated that they would keep consumers updated on the progress of their quality checks.
What are the symptoms of gluten intolerance?
People may experience the following symptoms for several hours or days after they consume gluten:
Abdominal pain;
Anaemia;
Anxiety;
Bloating or gas;
Brain fog or trouble concentrating;
Depression;
Diarrhoea or constipation;
Fatigue;
Headache;
Joint pain;
Nausea and vomiting; and
Skin rashes.
Many people with gluten intolerance also have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
There is currently no cure for gluten intolerance. However, most people find relief from symptoms by following a gluten-free diet. Probiotics, which are a combination of live beneficial bacteria or yeasts that live naturally in our bodies, also help increase the good bacteria in our guts. They can also reduce symptoms of bloating, gas, or constipation.
