Many of you might appreciate a good curry night every now and then – whether you’re enjoying it at home, as a homemade meal or takeaway treat, or at your local Indian restaurant. But we also know that when it comes to food safety, there's nothing more important than staying informed about potential risks.

For this reason, we’d like to draw your attention to a recent urgent recall involving a popular butter chicken sauce, which could pose a serious health risk if consumed.

Vegetali Foods Pty Ltd has issued an immediate recall of its One Rusty Jack Indian Butter Chicken Simmer Sauce (400g).

This particular product has been sold at independent food retailers in New South Wales and independent food retailers, including IGA stores, in Queensland. Please take note and spread the word to friends and family who may have this product in their pantry.

The recalled sauce includes all best-before dates up to and including May 25, 2023.

Food Standards Australia has informed the public that the recall is due to the presence of an undeclared allergen – tree nut, specifically cashew.

Food allergies are a serious health concern, and with allergens like tree nuts, even a small trace can cause a severe reaction in individuals who are allergic or intolerant. Reactions can range from mild symptoms, such as itching and hives, to life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

‘Any consumers who have a cashew allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed,’ Food Standards Australia has warned in its recall notice.

‘Consumers who have a cashew allergy or intolerance should not consume this product and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,’ the notice read.

"Consumers who have a cashew allergy or intolerance should not consume this product"

As I have no one in my house with a cashew allergy, I wouldn't be returning the item if I had it in my pantry, besides any stuff with a best before date of 25 May would have - hopefully, been consumed by now.

Furthermore, as this affects only a small group of people, the hysterical manner in which this article was written is somewhat over the top!
