WARNING: Is your favourite beer being recalled?

Here at Seniors Discount Club, we know that many of our members love a cold one as much as the next person. It's a wonderful way to unwind and have a chat with friends and family—so long as it's done in moderation, of course. However, we must share a recent recall notice that affects a popular Australian beer, which may be unsafe to consume.

Fortitude Brewing Company is recalling its Pacer Beer after discovering the possibility of secondary fermentation. For those not familiar with the brewing process, secondary fermentation occurs when residual yeast and carbohydrates within the beer interact, producing excess alcohol and carbonation. This can cause the alcohol content to be higher than what is indicated on the product label and may lead to a range of health risks if consumed.

Pacer Beer, crafted by Fortitude Brewing Company, is undergoing a recall as a result of a secondary fermentation issue.

The recalled Pacer Beer has been available for sale at Fortitude Brewing Company's Tamborine Mountain location, as well as in Dan Murphy's stores in Queensland. The affected products are those with a ‘best-before date’ of February 15 and February 16, 2024.

So, what's the big deal about a bit of extra alcohol in your beer? To put it simply, excess alcohol can be particularly dangerous. It can lead to a higher risk of falls, increased blood pressure, heart problems, and even exacerbate existing medical conditions. Additionally, it's important to remember that if you are on medication, it may interact negatively with excess alcohol.

Ingesting products with excess carbonation can also result in bloating, gas, and discomfort – not something any of us want to deal with during a relaxing evening.

If you happen to have any affected Pacer Beer bottles in your possession, we strongly advise against consuming them or even opening them, as doing so could potentially cause injury. Instead, please contact Fortitude Brewing Company Pty Ltd for proper disposal instructions and reimbursement arrangements.

While product recalls can be worrying, they are an essential part of ensuring public safety and maintaining the high standards of our Australian food and drink industry. It's always wise to keep informed of any recalls affecting your favourite products.

Consumer Rights and Protections in Australia

It is important for consumers to understand their rights and protections when it comes to product recalls. In Australia, consumers are protected by the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), which provides a legal framework to ensure the safety and quality of products and services and prohibits risky or misleading practices.

According to the ACL, both businesses and consumers have a legal obligation to act honestly, and businesses must provide products that are ‘safe, fit for purpose and comply with any applicable production information.’ In addition, businesses must provide consumers with clear information on the products they sell, including any warnings or potential risks related to the use of the product.

In the case of a product recall, consumers have the right to return the product for a full refund and to be reimbursed for any expenses they have incurred due to the recall. Consumers can also contact consumer protection agencies if they have any questions or concerns about their rights in relation to a product recall.

"Aussie Favourite"?
Turn it up! Until reading this story, I had no idea that this mob existed (and I LOVE my beer!).
Then again, you're referring to a product with ABV under 3%, which is what I call "Why bother?"
Secondary fermentation in a commercial product just means rubbish Quality Control at the manufacturing stage, so I won't be buying this stuff to try it.
