Want to make the popular Macca’s El Maco burger at home? Here’s how!

Macca’s released their classic and wildly popular burger, the El Maco, back into the public eye again after a long hiatus, with hundreds of Aussies excited to get their hands on the limited-edition sandwich.

But the catch here is that the burger is only available for a short time, making it tricky to get unless McDonald’s decides to change their mind. Luckily, an ALDI fan came up with a simple tip on how anyone can make their own DIY El Maco burger all year round using a handful of supermarket buys.

The shopper posted her hack in a popular Facebook group and described how she recreated the burger.

‘All ALDI ingredients, the burgers are better at ALDI,’ she wrote in her post. She also said that the burger she made was a combination of Macca’s El Maco and KFC’s Crunch Burger.

She said she used ALDI’s Southern Style Chicken Burger patties, sliced cheese, lettuce, tomato, salsa, bacon, corn chips, sour cream and mayonnaise – sandwiched between a sesame seed bun.

Many social media users were excited to try the recipe out for themselves.

‘Look awesome,’ shared one.

‘Get in my belly,’ said another.

One responded: ‘That looks delicious. Yes, we buy all the ingredients from ALDI, [then] make our own.’

Another agreed and said that the shopper’s version looks ‘yummier’ and it’s cheaper.

‘We make our own burgers, too,’ they added.

The El Maco burger is available this summer only, alongside a handful of other fan-favourite food items such as the Caramilk Hokey Pokey McFlurry, and the Cajun Chicken Deluxe.

If, however, you’d like a healthier burger, you can follow the recipe below for beef and vegetable burgers!

You’ll need the following ingredients:
  • 4 whole-grain rolls, sliced in half
  • 600g lean beef mince
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 egg
  • 1 zucchini, grated
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 4 slices pineapple, in juice, drained
  • 150g sliced beetroot, drained
  • 1 cup lettuce leaves
  • 4 tbsp. (1 tbsp. per burger) salt/sugar-reduced tomato or BBQ sauce
This is enough to serve a four-person household.

Then, follow the methods below:
  • Preheat the BBQ or frying pan to medium-high heat. If you don’t have a BBQ or frying pan you can cook the burgers in the oven or on a sandwich press.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the lean mince, crushed garlic, cumin, egg, zucchini, and carrot.
  • Divide the mixture into four and shape each into a burger patty.
  • Heat a little olive oil on the BBQ and cook patties on each side until browned (approx. 5 mins each side). They’re done when the inside of the patty is no longer pink.
  • Toast buns and add approx. 1 tbsp of your preferred sauce to each.
  • Layer burger patty, sliced beetroot, pineapple, tomatoes, and lettuce on a toasted bun.
This recipe takes about 25 minutes to prepare and cook! Perfect for a quick dinner.
