Want a discount at this café? You’ll need to mind your manners first!

We all know how important it is to be polite, but sometimes we need a little reminder – especially when we're feeling rushed in the morning.

But what if being polite could also help you nab a bargain on your next cuppa? That's exactly what one cafe in the UK is hoping to encourage with its new sliding prices policy.

Chaii Stop, a cafe in Preston, UK, has come up with a fantastic way to reward customers for simply being polite. The cafe's new policy means a chai tea could cost you as little as $3.40 if you say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, or as high as $9 if you don't!

A sign at the cafe explains the pricing gauge:

For example, if a customer asks politely for their drink and says ‘Hello, [one] Desi Chai, please.’, they would only have to pay $3.40. If they only say, ‘Desi Chai please,’ the price will go up to $5.40. But if the customer simply says ‘Desi Chai’, their drink price goes up to $9!

Usman Hussain, the owner of Chaii Stop, said he hoped this new policy would promote 'good vibes only' in his café. ‘I think it's a nice reminder to use your manners,’ he shared to reporters, ‘because, unfortunately, sometimes we do need reminding’. Usman also said he was yet to sting a customer the full $9 – instead opting to give them a warning – but that people have been appreciative of the move so far.

‘We’ve never struggled with rude customers, but since having the sign, people are definitely coming in more open and having a laugh with us.’ He said.

Usman shared that, to him, the most important thing to remember is to walk through his door and be treated as if the customer is a welcome guest in his home. ‘It’s nice to have that respect reciprocated.’ He further explained.

The inspiration for the sign came from an American café that Usman saw on Facebook a couple of years ago. ‘If a customer doesn’t use their manners I point to the sign, and they immediately ask again more politely.’ He describes that people can be quite rude in the morning, but when they see his sign, it immediately makes them think.

Usman goes on to say that no one knows what someone is going through to make them act rude, but the sign helps them drop their guard. ‘It gets them talking,’ he said, ‘like an icebreaker. And that’s what we’re all about. Any negativity gets left at the door.’

Customers appear to appreciate the move too, with reviews online describing the Indian-inspired tea room as ‘a lovely, quirky place with top-tier service’.

Key Takeaways

  • A cafe in the UK is charging different prices for tea depending on how polite the customer is.
  • The owner of the cafe hopes that this will encourage better manners among customers.
  • So far, the reaction from customers has been positive.

So, there you go, folks! Don’t you think this is a genius way to remind people to be kind to others? What are your thoughts about Usman’s new policy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

This isn't new. Years ago, my friend owned a cafe. She had a large sign displayed which said, in effect, that the price of the coffee was dependent upon your attitude. And she wasn't joking. Regular patrons also had their own special coffee mug with their name on it which hung from hooks over the service bar.

I fully support it after all it doesn't cost you anything to say thank you or please.

What a great idea. Maybe smaller cafes could do this, it would save customers money by teaching them good manners. Double tick of approval. Australia should as well.

It is a wonderful idea. Leave your troubles outside when drinking with a friend or even alone, BUT such a pity that one has to go to the trouble of teaching manners which to most people you would think one learns from home? Like "respect" you don't learn it. You EARN it.
