Viral $6 fruit-shaped ice cream hits Woolworths—worth the price?

Food trends come and go, but every now and then, a product takes social media by storm, sparking curiosity and debate.

One particular ice cream brand has caused quite a stir, with its eye-catching design and promise of a unique dessert experience.

Now available at Woolworths, it has divided opinion—while some rave about its quality, others argue it's all style and no substance.

A Chinese ice cream brand that gained massive attention on social media recently made its way to Woolworths, but not everyone was impressed.

Dasenlin Fumang ice creams, which sell for $6 each, are known for their strikingly realistic fruit-shaped designs.

Each variant is coated in a thin layer of white chocolate, mimicking the appearance and texture of real fruit.

Previously, these desserts were only found in Asian supermarkets, where they developed a cult following among food enthusiasts and influencers.

Now, with their arrival at Woolworths, many were eager to see if they lived up to the hype.

However, one food reviewer did not hold back in his assessment.

Russ Eats, known for his brutally honest takes, was unimpressed with the mango flavour, criticising both its texture and taste.

‘They're $6 but they're not very big, so they better be good,’ he said before taking a bite.

‘That's one of the most over-hyped products ever. It is absolute s***.’

The mango version was designed to resemble the fruit, complete with a white chocolate shell, while the peach and lemon variants were crafted with similar attention to detail.

The ice creams promised an ‘elevated’ take on traditional treats, featuring a fruit-flavoured core.

Russ described the mango’s coating as ‘soggy’ and the ice cream itself as underwhelming.

‘It's not a mango sorbet that has a nice, fruity twang—it's cheap mango ice cream,’ he said.

He compared it to a mango Weiss bar and declared the classic Aussie treat far superior.

His final verdict for the mango ice cream was a one out of ten.

The peach flavour fared even worse.

‘The peach ice cream is worse. It's like you've tipped a peach Suntory over cheap vanilla ice cream. That's a half out of ten,’ he said.

Expecting a zesty kick from the lemon flavour, he was left disappointed.

‘How can you put lemon on the packaging and give it no twang? That is absolute filth. I'm not just overreacting for views, I am genuinely angry,’ he said.

The lemon ice cream also scored a one out of ten.

His harsh critique sparked debate among dessert lovers.

Some agreed with his assessment, while others defended the product, arguing that Asian desserts tend to be less sweet than Western ones.

‘What many people may not realise is that Asian desserts are traditionally less sweet than Western ones. If you're accustomed to high sugar content, these might not be to your taste. Personally, I find them velvety and the perfect amount of sweetness!’ one person commented.

Others believed the biggest issue was the price.

‘The fact that you can buy a giant tub of ice cream for the same price is what gets me,’ one user wrote.

Some dismissed Russ’s review entirely.

One commented: ‘Think you've missed the mark here. The mango is delicious. Peach isn't bad either.’

A few fans praised both the taste and the craftsmanship behind the ice creams.

‘Gonna be honest, I've had all these many times—they're absolutely delicious. And it's really cool to see how much they look like a real mango!’ one person said.

I certainly won't be trying them any time soon. I find the price of ice-cream getting way over the top and fast becoming a special high days and holidays treat as it is. How can the Supermarkets purchasing departments think this addition to their range is a good idea in the current economic climate? Imagine buying one of these for each member of a family, a sure fire road to going broke. :(
