Viennetta: the Australian classic dessert that's got millennials and Gen Z's talking!

Viennetta was a common freezer staple for many Aussies, especially throughout the 1980s and 1990s, when almost everyone you knew gushed over the delicious dessert treat!

We love it because it’s basically ice cream sandwiched between two crispy chocolate layers – and when you cut into it, those cool, creamy waves would come spilling out. Mmm… memories!

In case you're not familiar with this delicious treat, Viennetta is an ice cream cake that was invented back in 1982 by British confectionery company Wall's.

And even though it's been nearly 40 years since its creation, this Aussie favourite is still going strong.

In fact, a recent poll conducted by 9Honey Kitchen shows that Viennetta is the nation's favourite nostalgic frozen dessert!

Out of 704 respondents aged 18 and above, around 33 per cent voted for the iconic treat with the famous tagline 'One slice is never enough'. That's pretty impressive, considering some of its well-known contemporaries (like Neapolitan ice cream and Sara Lee Cheesecake) didn't even come close.

So why do we love Viennetta so much?

Well, for starters, it takes us back to simpler times when life wasn't so hectic and stressful. It also reminds us of birthdays, and other happy memories spent with family and friends – all while satisfying our sweet tooth cravings at the same time!

Plus, let's face it: sometimes, we just need a little comfort food in our lives, right?

If you're curious to see what all the fuss is about but haven't had Viennetta in years, don't worry – you can still find it in the frozen section of supermarkets across Australia.

To celebrate 40 years since the iconic treat was invented, Streets decided to launch a new flavour that will surely be a hit to customers of all ages: Viennetta Birthday Cake. Layers of sweet vanilla and berry ice cream sit atop a chocolate ripple base, and the whole thing is finished off with a festive sprinkling of rainbow sprinkles. Yum!

9Honey Kitchen also decided to host a taste test for millennials and Gen Z's (in their 20s), using the new birthday cake version as their test subject. Their reactions? Let's just say they definitely understand what all the hype is about now!

Here's what they thought:

Georgia: 'I would so have that on my birthday,' Georgia gushed about the sweet treat. 'I've never had it before… I know it's an Australian staple, but I come from an ethnic family!'

Even though she'd never tried Viennetta before this taste test, Georgia said it reminded her of another classic Aussie dessert: Freddo ice cream cake (adored by kids around the country). 'It's like the adult Freddo cake,' she laughed. 'And this is even better!'

Madi: Madi also agreed that Viennetta tasted very similar to Freddo cakes... but said she would rather just stick to eating those instead. 'To be honest, I would rather just have the Freddo cake and have the kid moment,' she adds with a laugh. 'It's really nice, though – sweet! But I couldn't have a whole one because I'm lactose intolerant.'

Bronte: Even though Bronte knew that many Aussies regarded Viennetta as an all-time classic dessert, she had never actually had one. After having a mouthful, though, she said she could see why it wasn't as popular as it once was. 'It's just ice cream with chocolate in it. It's nice,' Bronte says. 'But I don't think it's worth the hype.'

Lauren: Lauren has only ever tried the birthday cake version of Viennetta, and when asked about her favourite part of the treat, she always mentions the tasty sprinkles. 'It's got the crunchy chocolate bits and the strawberry flavour to add a little bit of excitement to your spoonful,' she says. 'I would definitely have this again – maybe not as a birthday cake, though!'

Kailah: Kailah, on the other hand, said she'd much rather have the Viennetta as an after-dinner snack than as a birthday cake. 'It wouldn't be my first or second choice for a cake. It tasted a bit like ice cream topped off with a bit of ice magic chocolate,' she says. 'But it was still really good!'
Key Takeaways

  • Viennetta is a classic Australian dessert that most Aussies remember fondly.
  • Some younger generations, however, are not as acquainted with the delicious ice cream cake.
  • A birthday cake flavour has been released to celebrate 40 years of Viennetta.

So there you have it, folks! All in all, it seems like the new Viennetta birthday cake is a hit with millennials and Gen Z – even if they're not quite sure what to make of it!

If you haven't had Viennetta in a while (or ever), we highly recommend giving the classic Vanilla flavour or the new Birthday Cake flavour a try – especially now that summer is just around the corner. Trust us, your taste buds will thank you!

Streets Viennetta Birthday Cake is available now in IGA and Coles supermarkets nationwide, so make sure you check it out the next time you go there!

In the olden days, I would sometimes buy one for a dinner at home with friends, but never really impressed by the taste. I am sure it is shrunk today hasn't everything except waistlines?:+{

I tried one of these a few weeks back, I think I was looking for nostalgia. I was so disappointed, not only do they taste nothing like the Walls original ones I had as a kid but they are so small when you get them out of the box, more like a snack than a treat. Walls Ice cream was so scrumptious, thick and creamy without all the add ins they use these days, if I think about it really hard I can almost taste it, Yum.!! :)
