Video shop takes you back to the 90s! — “There are some gems here you’d never find again”

Raise your hand if you've encountered the term "Netflix"!

Like us, we’re sure that not only have you heard of it, some of you are currently using this content streaming platform for watching the latest movies and TV series being released.

While there are benefits to using streaming platforms (Stan, Binge, and Disney Plus being other examples), the rise of these services has caused the demise of video rental shops.

Yes, gone are the days when we excitedly headed out to the nearest video store (we had a Civic, Blockbuster, and Video-Ezy all within walking distance at one point) to check out which movies they had on the shelves only to rush home and stick them in our trusty VHS players.

Sadly, these days you can count the number of video shops in Australia with your two hands as only a couple of them are left. Well okay - not quite, a recent article by ABC estimated that there are around 500 video shops left in Australia, but that’s down from over 2500 just a couple of decades ago.

One such store is Fox Video which is run by Larry Fox and his wife Louise.

The store, located just south of the Central Queensland town of Rockhampton in Mount Morgan, first started operations in 1994.

The store’s aesthetic definitely takes us down memory lane, and from the picture below it looks like stepping inside it is like travelling back in time.

Thousands of DVD’s and VHS tapes line the shelves, imparting an air of nostalgia to its customers.

Mr Fox said: “There are some gems here you’d never find again.”

“We chase them up from all over the world, rare movies, stuff you can’t find anywhere else.”

The owner also disclosed that the store was almost shut down 25 years ago when pay-TV started dominating the film viewing industry.

However, he said that the lessons they have learned through that rough time have helped them to keep their operations going despite the rapidly growing popularity of streaming services.

“It’s not as good as it used to be of course, but it’s steady," Larry said.

Although it might take a while for customers to find their favourite movie among the walls of DVDs displayed in the shop, it doesn't take long to feel the sense of familiarity and nostalgia the place brings to its visitors.

Mr Fox said: “It’s a place where all those happy memories were on a Friday night - the kids come down, they pick their favourite movie ... and everybody misses that.”

The Fox Video team also reached out to the community, encouraging supporters to join them in their endeavour to reach another milestone — its 30th birthday.

So, our dear members who are in the area or are looking to spend a weekend or two in Central Queensland, you might want to take a tour of the shop to feel the 90's nostalgia! Remember to be kind, and rewind!

Great work Fox Video. It takes good ol' country gumption to hold on to our recent history. I'll bet the people in Mt Morgan love you. I don't think their reception there is much good anyway. They probably really appreciate all the new DVDs to rent.
