Victory! Matildas' thrilling 2-0 win over Denmark secures their spot in FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-finals

A celebration is in order after our very own Matildas team made it to the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-finals with a nail-biting win over Denmark in Sydney!

In front of a passionate and vocal crowd at Stadium Australia, the Matildas worked valiantly to keep Denmark in check before Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso fired them ahead with two goals on either side of half-time.

The Matildas held out with an excellent performance to protect their 2-0 lead and make it through to the next stage of the competition, where their next game will be against France or Morocco.

‘The Matildas were absolutely excellent tonight,’ former England star Izzy Christiansen commented on Matilda’s performance.

‘It was not their best performance, but it was a very mature performance. It was very professional. They got the job done.’

Their tenacious and focused defensive effort was also boosted by the return of their skipper Sam Kerr, who entered the fray for the last 15 minutes to be greeted with wild cheers from the crowd. Although her time on the field was brief, she nearly got the icing on the cake with a rasping effort that just flashed over the bar!

'Kerr changed the game, offering us a normal No.9 (striker),' said injured Matildas star Elise Kellond-Knight.

The opening exchanges of the match were all Denmark, driven by their captain Pernille Harder who certainly tested Matildas midfielders Katrina Gorry and Kyra Cooney-Cross.

It was in one of these testy exchanges that the Matildas eventually found their way back into the match with a clever through ball to Foord, who then made it to the edge of the box before dinking it through the legs of the Danish goalkeeper Lene Christensen to make it 1-0 for the Matildas.

The momentum stayed with them as Emily van Egmond fed Foord and Fowler in the middle of the pitch, and the impressive duo combined to slip the ball to Raso, who then found the back of the net with a finish from close range.

As expected, the crowd went wild, and their joyous cheers filled the stadium until the end.

We’re a huge soccer family - my husband coached a football team for ten years, and our youngest son has been playing since he was nine, and represented Victoria three times. Of course we’ve been watching all the Matilda’s games, but are disappointed that most of the WWC games aren’t on free to air television.

If there is anything football related on free TV, we watch it.
Thank goodness the Matildas game was free to air because we would have missed a really good game.
Of particular interest to us was seeing Emily Van Egmond start for the second time and in fine form. She was a local girl here in Newcastle for a while before going on to bigger and better things. The best football strategist out there in my opinion.
All the girls gave their heart and soul into this match. It is good to see the most famous thigh of the campaign has healed and our Sammi is back on deck. Watch out the rest of the world...we have a great team.
I'll be singing Waltzing Matilda here at home and look forward to great things ahead.
