Victa mower

Who remembers the iconic Victa mower? It’s one of the Aussie inventions that left a lasting impact on the world. Developed by Mervyn Victor Richardson in August 1952, this ingenious creation originally aimed to support his son’s university education by aiding his lawn mowing business. Within five years, Victa had sold an astonishing 150,000 mowers, and its success has continued to soar ever since, with over 8 million mowers sold worldwide. Here’s a photo of M V Richardson with his invention from all those years ago. Do you have any fond memories of wielding a Victa?

Used to repair them at Bob Myers' business at Belgrave on my holidays to make a little money to run my old car.

My father brought a Victa Vantage lawn mower many years ago about 35 years and when he passed, I inherited it and to this day it has not missed a beat, The only thing I have done is purchase new blades and a spark plug.

Probably every family’s first mower was a victa, not much more than a motor sitting on top of a piece of metal with blades under it. Pull rope start. But boy did they go and last, a new spark plug and blades now and again was all they needed to keep them going for generations. Compare to some of today’s u beaut souped up models that seem to die as soon as the warranty expires, and that the everyday parent, kid needs a university degree to change the spark plug or blades. Even modern victa mowers are like the rest these days. Sometimes simple should be left alone.
