Vacuum cleaning tips from a professional cleaner!

Most of us here probably have a trusty vacuum cleaner at home. They’re one of the most efficient cleaning tools that every household has – working extra hard to keep our homes looking all good, clean, and dust-free.

For most homeowners, their vacuum cleaners are an investment in their homes. And just like any investment, making sure that it gets the proper care it deserves is the most effective way to keep it performing at its best.

That is why here, we’re sharing some tips from a professional cleaner on how to properly maintain your vacuum cleaner!

You folks might already be familiar with Kacie, the professional cleaner from Melbourne whom we previously featured for her cleaning tips and tricks.

Now, she’s back here again to remind us to clean our vacuums regularly.

“A neglected vacuum will spread dirt around your house, not just on the floor but also in the air,” she said in one of her latest videos on TikTok.

Her first tip is to make sure the bag is replaced on a regular basis.

Many people assume that bags only need to be replaced when they feel full (Which we are guilty of!). But to keep your machine at its optimum performance, you have to replace the bag when it is more than halfway full, not when it is completely packed with dirt.

Since the dust and debris that vacuum cleaners pick up need room to enter the bag, having a “full” bag would block these particles and your vacuum may not work as efficiently as it should.

Kacie’s next tip is to always check the filter.

Most vacuum cleaner models these days already have filters attached to help pick up particles that may contaminate your indoor air quality. If your vacuum cleaner has one, you should clean it, or better yet, replace it regularly, just like the bag. Or else you’ll risk these harmful particles going back into your surroundings.

Kacie also recommends cleaning one of the often forgotten parts of the vacuum cleaner – the hose.

“We all know you need to clean the head, but when was the last time you cleaned the hose? Because I'm sure there are people who never do that,” she says.

Simply detach your vacuum hose from the appliance and let water run through it in the bathtub or the sink. You’ll be surprised how much dirt flows out!

Kacie’s video racked up over 73,000 views in a span of a few days, with plenty of comments from people who admitted they have never thought to regularly clean their vacuum cleaners.

Our friends over at CHOICE have also shared some tips on how to clean and properly maintain your vacuum cleaner:
  • Check the instructions for how to remove and replace the parts, as well as which parts are safe to wash.
  • Occasional disinfection of the cleaning head can be worthwhile.
  • For bagless vacuum cleaners, empty the dust bin, and clean the cleaning head and brush rollers.
  • Remove tangled hair and threads from the roller head with scissors.
  • Clean the roller head and bristles of any dust, lint and hair – a small brush can help with this.
