URGENT: Stove cooktops recalled due to possible risk of serious injury

For safety reasons, a kitchen stove cooktop has been recalled due to the potential for the glass to shatter, posing a major threat to anyone in the vicinity.

This past week, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a recall for different models of the Westinghouse black tempered glass gas cooktop that was manufactured by Electrolux Home Products.

There are two versions available for this product: a 60cm three-burner and a 90cm five-burner, both of which fail to comply with the specifications of the Domestic Gas Cooking Appliances Standard.

Since February 2020, the range has been available for purchase through retailers such as Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Reece Plumbing, and Winning Appliances, as well as many appliance stores abroad.

'If the glass breaks, it may shatter into fragments and shards that may hit people using the cooktop or people nearby and pose a risk of serious injury.' announced the ACCC.

Consumers have been strongly encouraged to verify the model number of their cooktops to determine whether or not their appliances are impacted by the recall.

The affected model numbers are WHG638BC - PNC: 943254149, WHG958BC - PNC: 943254153, with serial numbers ranging from 5301134 to 22503805.

According to the authorities, other identifying numbers on the device include AGA 8145G.

Customers who are affected by the recall should get in touch with Electrolux as soon as possible to arrange for a refund or schedule a free in-home replacement visit from a service professional.

Electrolux Home Products customers can reach out to the company's customer service at 1800 001 218 or [email protected] for additional details.

There is always a lot to consider when deciding on a stove top – such as gas or induction, tempered glass or stainless steel.

Although glass gas stovetops (which are often available in black or white) appear sleek and modern, many shoppers have reservations about them.

Despite what most people think, experts say that toughened glass is not unbreakable and can shatter for several reasons.

Some of the reasons are putting too much weight on the glass, changes in the air around it, stress from a bad installation, and damage to the exterior.

Here are some safety guidelines to follow when using tempered glass gas stoves:

Don't put anything around the burner or over the glass top.

You might want to keep oil from splashing on the glass top and making it dirty, but a piece of cloth is all you need to clean glass. If you cover the glass top with aluminium or other materials, the heat will just be trapped and sent back to the glass. And that makes it more likely that it will break.

Use the right pan supports and don't use pots and pans that are too big.

Pan supports keep your pots and pans stable while they are on the burner, but if you use the wrong one or don't put it in the right place, it can damage the hob. Also, bigger pots and pans, especially ones made of cast iron or stainless steel, trap more heat between the bottom of the pan and the glass.

Don't put hot pots, pans, and other cookware directly on a glass table or counter. Credit: Getty Images.

Never place hot cookware (such as pots, pans, etc.) directly on a glass table or counter.

Even if the pots and pans aren't hot, putting them directly on the glass surface can damage it from the weight. Also, be extra careful when using things with sharper edges, like a stainless steel spatula, because these can also damage the surface.

In order to prevent the burners from becoming clogged, experts also recommend frequently cleaning the stove and reading the instructions before use. Any problems, flaws, or damage should be reported right away to the authorised agent or service centre.

If your glass stove breaks, it's important to stay calm and get the glass pieces out of the way quickly, especially if there are kids or pets around.

After checking to see if the product is still under warranty (some brands will replace shattered glass tops for life) and contacting the authorised agent for a replacement, don't forget to report the incident to Product Safety Australia using their online feedback form.

Glass stove tops are nice to look at, but we have to warn you, members – they might come with a safety risk, so please be careful when buying one.

I have a glass cooktop but mine is electric not gas. I keep it covered with a tea towel when it's not being used in order to keep it from getting scratched inadvertently. It's super easy to keep clean and I love it.:)

I also keep a large tea towel on my glass convection cooktop to stop any scratches.
