Urgent recall: IKEA coffee maker pulled from shelves after a defect posed a risk for serious injuries

There have been several urgent recalls circulating lately and hopping on that list is an IKEA stovetop coffee maker. The product was sold online and in-store.
The consumer watchdog, ACCC, published the recall notice for the appliance on their Product Safety Australia website on Wednesday.
The authority detailed that a defect found in the METALLISK Espresso Maker with the stainless-steel safety valve could cause the appliance to “burst”, which results in “burns, scalding, or serious injury”.
The manufacturing defect was spotted in the safety valve itself. When the coffee maker’s safety valve fails to function as intended, it can “cause the product to burst,” IKEA wrote in the product safety recall.

“The burst can cause a sudden separation between the top and lower half of the espresso maker. If the espresso maker bursts during use, this can increase the risk of burns, scalding, or serious injury,”
IKEA has urged customers with the item on-hand to cease using the product immediately. Shoppers should return the product for a full refund or exchange, with no proof of purchase required.
To check if your MATALLISK has been recalled, look for the manufacturing date stamps at the bottom of the product. The ones that have been pulled out of the shelves indicate: “between 2040 and 2204”.

The company’s UK site issued a statement regarding the issue, saying: “Ikea has received reports of the espresso maker bursting during use, due to a change of material and construction, with the potential of injury as a result.”
