Unlock the Trick to Sparkling Mirrors!

Cleaning mirrors is a task that can often feel like a hassle due to the stubborn smudges, dirt, and other kinds of residue that accumulate on the surface.

So, if you’re having trouble getting your mirror to look perfectly clear every time you clean it, you’re most likely making a few mistakes that you’re not aware of.

What’s the ‘right’ way to clean a mirror? Well, we have some tips on how to do it in the best way possible, and hopefully, help you avoid common mistakes that could make the problem worse.

Surprisingly, a lot of the common mistakes when cleaning a mirror don’t have that much to do with the choice of cleaner or cleaning product, but with the technique.

To help you get the perfect clean and clear mirror, here are some things to look out for:

Mistake #1: Using paper towels

It might be convenient, but paper towels often leave behind streaks and lint that cannot be easily wiped away. Instead, use a soft, clean microfibre cloth when cleaning to avoid these issues and get the best results.

Mistake #2: Not dusting first

Before using a cleaner on a mirror, make sure that you remove any dust accumulation that has built up on the surface. Otherwise, when the dust gets sprayed with the cleaner, it gets wet and spreads around the mirror instead. You can clean the surface first with a damp microfibre cloth.

Mistake #3: Using a dirty sponge

It’s easy to think that the same cloth or sponge you use to clean the rest of the room can also be used to clean the mirror, but try to resist the temptation. The cloth used to clean other surfaces is often filthy, which will just add even more dirt to your mirror.

Mistake #4: Spraying cleaner on the mirror directly

Don’t go overboard when spritzing cleaner onto the mirror, as too much product causes the liquid to drip and streak. Instead, spray your cleaner on a clean cloth before wiping the mirror down.

Mistake #5: Trying to remove spots or stains by scrubbing

Scrubbing your mirror can cause just as much damage as trying to use the wrong cleaning cloth on it. Instead use a soft, non-abrasive cloth and clean in a circular motion.

And here are some of our favourite tips and best practices for cleaning mirrors:

Tip #1: Use the right cleaning solution

You can use your favourite cleaning solution, or browse through some of our recommendations here. However, if you’re pressed for time or don’t want to spend money on cleaning products, a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water is an excellent natural cleaning solution for mirrors.

Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent that is both safe and effective. It cuts through grease, grime, and other build-ups on the surface of the mirror. The water helps to dilute the vinegar’s harsh acidity and prevents it from leaving any residue.

Tip #2: Cleaning in a circular motion

We mentioned it above, but cleaning mirrors in a circular motion, rather than back and forth, helps to prevent streaks from forming on the surface of the mirror. This helps to distribute the cleaning solution evenly over the surface of the mirror and prevent the excess cleaning solution from pooling in one area.

Tip #3: Wiping the edges and corners thoroughly

Dirt, grime, and other build-ups can gather in the edges and corners of the mirror, so it's important to wipe these areas thoroughly.

Tip #4: Dry the mirror thoroughly

After cleaning the mirror, make sure to dry it thoroughly. Drying the mirror helps to prevent streaks and water marks from forming. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to dry the mirror, or use a squeegee if you have one.

Tip #5: Store cleaning supplies correctly

Make sure to store your cleaning supplies correctly to keep them in good condition. Microfibre cloths should be washed and dried after each use, and cleaning solutions should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Key Takeaways
  • Common mistakes in cleaning a mirror include using paper towels and not dusting first.
  • Always use a clean microfibre cloth when wiping the mirror.
  • Never use a dirty cloth or sponge to clean a mirror.

SDC put up a cleaning hack for mirrors a few months ago , a mixture of
1 cup Vinegar
2 cups water
1/4 cup dishwashing liquid

This worked wonders in the beginning but after using it maybe the 4th time on it just smudge really bad and I worked it out it must have been a build up of the soap

I always dust first abd use either a micro cloth or even a new chux cloth which I buy a packet of the homebrand ones 10 for $1 or when on sale the rolls

I used to use newspaper with windex and this worked well

I really detest having to clean our wardrobe mirror doors with a 4 bedroom house and 3 panel mirrors on each wardrobe is enough to put anyone off so I appreciate any tips given

I never us anything but water on my mirrors, I have 2 cloths I bought at an eco store in the UK and I wet one, wipe the mirror and dry it off with the other one, no streaks, spotlessly clean every time.

One thing I hated when I had home help was the way they cleaned the mirrors. I always had to ask them not to clean as I used to use hand wash to anti-fog the mirror, especially in the winter. The cleaning of any glass was not needed in my bathroom but getting the workers to do anything else was a serious chore. I ended up sacking them as incompetent. I have plodded on on my own since April last year. with no help but my wonderful son-in-law who just doesn't see the dirt like many men. It is getting harder to get any help let alone good help these days.
