University databases are available through State Libraries
For those members, their families and friends, who are former or current university students, it will be of interest to know that the databases used for research are available for free through most Australian State Libraries.
For university students to use these databases remotely from their home computer, the university pays expensive subscription fees to the database providers. Once the student graduates, their remote access is usually terminated immediately. For those wishing to continue their research or prepare for a higher degree, they can access the databases through the university library computers but not from their home computers.
Happily, the State Libraries provide the same access remotely free of charge to Library members. To obtain access, first join your State Library. You will receive a membership number. Go to the Library's website and click on their research link. You then enter your membership number and the database resources will open up for you. NSW, Victoria and Queensland State Libraries provide this service. If you are in another location, check with your State Library to see if they also provide this service.
