Unexpected retailer overtakes Bunnings as Australia's top online store

A shift in Australia's online retail rankings has surprised consumers, with a new leader emerging and overtaking a long-time favourite.

Based on an in-depth evaluation of performance across key areas, this unexpected change highlights the evolving landscape of e-commerce.

Industry experts recognise this development as reflecting changing consumer preferences and market dynamics.

The criteria for this prestigious accolade are rigorous and multifaceted.

Retailers are assessed on various metrics, including website traffic, site performance, mobile experience, delivery options, payment methods, and customer engagement.

This year, Power Retail introduced a new dimension to its evaluation process: customer satisfaction.

This addition proved to be a game-changer for BIG W.

David Fear, Power Retail's head of data, highlighted that BIG W's online platform has an extremely high customer satisfaction rate.

He also noted that it excels in providing an integrated, omnichannel experience.

An impressive 93 per cent of customers expressed satisfaction with their online journey through BIG W, a testament to the retailer's commitment to meeting consumer needs.

BIG W's success is attributed to several factors. Their competitive pricing strategy and extensive product range have consistently resonated with customers.

Moreover, their reliable service, characterised by fast delivery and excellent customer support, has cemented customer trust and loyalty.

Fear praised BIG W's exceptional performance across all stages of the online shopping experience, from acquiring customers to retaining them.

The shakeup in the rankings saw last year's champion, Bunnings, drop to fifth place.

Meanwhile, electronics giant JB Hi-Fi climbed second, with Kmart holding steady in the top three.

Chemist Warehouse also maintained a strong performance, retaining its fourth-place position.

The top 20 list featured other iconic Australian brands, including Myer, Officeworks, The Iconic, Rebel, BCF, Adore Beauty, Petbarn, David Jones, Dan Murphy’s, Target, The Good Guys, Appliances Online, IKEA, Bonds, and Spotlight.

This diverse group of retailers showcases the breadth of options available to Australian consumers and the competitive nature of the online retail market.

Grant Arnott, CEO and founder of Power Retail reflected on the significance of the All-Star Bash awards night, which celebrates the achievements of digital retail.

He remarked on the incredible impact the Top 100 businesses have had on the Australian economy over the past decade.

As we witness the digital retail landscape's dynamic trajectory, it's clear that the competition is fierce, and retailers must continuously strive to improve their online offerings.

For our seniors who have embraced online shopping, this news reminds us of the importance of looking beyond traditional favourites and exploring new options that may offer better service, prices, and satisfaction.

I do very limited online shopping and my daughter usually does it for me if I can't get it in store. I have most of the big stores just a few minutes from me so no need usually to shop online. Prefer to choose things myself unless availability is only online for something I have previously purchased.

As I refuse to partake in online shopping, I have shopped in-store at 12 of the 20 stores mentioned.

Big W is deserving of its top spot, being superior to Kmart in quite a few aspects.
  • Store layout - Big W has a more logical positioning of items where items of similar types are placed together.
  • Store tidiness - some Kmarts look like a warzone with clothing scattered on displays. Big W is much better at housekeeping.
  • Product range - Big W has a much bigger variety of product such as electronics and tech. Kmart has gradually reduced their range over the years. Ever tried to buy a television at Kmart in recent years?
  • Product choice - Big W has a variety of choices of an item, from generics to name brand. Kmart is cemented on to the Anko brand for nearly all their products.
  • Price - contrary to popular belief, Big W is cheaper in many of their product range, especially clothing.

I’ve shopped online (admittedly not very often), with Big W and have had no problems.

For many years shopping at Big W has been preferable to shopping at KMart. I agree with the points you’ve made.

It’s a pity that there are more KMarts in Perth than Big W. I also have to drive further to my nearest Big W.

I’m not surprised Big W has taken top spot.

We don’t have a BigW close to us. I have shopped on line with them and have had mixed experience. A couple of times I have been told that they can’t deliver to my area. Other times not a problem. If I go visit family then I do try and get in to a store while I’m there as I do actually like their stores
