Unbelievable! This $11.50 cleaning trick will leave your outdoor furniture looking brand new – here's how

With outdoor furniture now more popular than ever, many of us are looking for ways to spruce up our backyard and patio areas.

The good news is that you don’t always have to spend a fortune on new pieces – you can often achieve just as good, if not better results by giving existing pieces a makeover.

Recently, an Australian woman sent the internet into a frenzy after sharing pictures of a jaw-dropping transformation of her old timber chairs – using a $11.50 cleaning product.

She posted photos of her before and after results on Facebook, showing her scruffy, old wooden chairs now with a much fresher finish.

She captioned the incredible transformation with: ‘Chairs done! NapiSan for the win.’

Many upcycle enthusiasts were left stunned at how well it revived the woman’s outdoor furniture. And dozens demanded to know more about the cleaning hack.

‘You can’t make a statement like this and leave us all hanging! Details, details, details, please and thank you,’ one social media user commented.

‘I need to know this magic!’ Another responded.

Responding to the queries, the woman finally revealed how she was able to achieve such incredible results using NapiSan.

‘I was stuck without a car so I couldn’t go buy deck cleaner,’ she shared.

‘Google says NapiSan is just as good and I had that,’ the woman continued.

The woman then described how she used the product. First, she used the stain remover to make a ‘slurry’ paste, before putting a generous amount on each chair. She left the product on each of her outdoor furniture for about 20 minutes, before scrubbing it off to reveal a clean finish.

‘Greatly improved silvering. Then, I lightly sanded and oiled two coats,’ she explained.

You can buy 1kg of Vanish NapiSan Stain Remover at Woolworths for only $9.50 (currently on sale down from $11.50).

The unlikely cleaning hack shocked many social media users, with most of them saying they had no idea NapiSan could be used on timber.

‘This is amazing. I had those chairs and the bird poo was impossible. I wish I’d thought of NapiSan!’ One wrote.

‘Amazing! So clever!’ Added another. While a third replied: ‘Fabulous results!’

Others shared their own hacks for keeping outdoor furniture spick and span. Someone suggested that Coke will do the job just as well.

‘No different from Coke. Tip it on and rub over with a brush and then hose it down,’ they said.

If you have outdoor furniture but don’t want to use NapiSan, we have some other top cleaning tips for you to try!

Scrub and wash your wood furniture

You can always clean outdoor furniture using a damp cloth that’s been dipped in a soapy solution or warm water. It’s important you don’t use harsh chemicals otherwise you might damage your furniture.

If the piece requires deeper cleaning, you can scrub it with a soft scrub brush or a toothbrush, and a mix of water and dishwasher detergent.
Tip
Always scrub in the same direction as the wood grain and NEVER use a power washer to clean your wood furniture. This can remove the soft wood between your furniture’s grain lines and force water into the pores.
If you have challenging stains, lightly sand and rinse the surface until they disappear, and then wipe away the excess water with a microfibre cloth.

Removing water stains from wood

To remove water stains from your wooden furniture, put some non-gel toothpaste on the stain and rub it with a soft cloth until the stain is lifted. For stubborn stains, mix equal parts bicarb soda and toothpaste. Put some on the stain, rub lightly, and wipe the toothpaste off with a clean and damp cloth before drying it thoroughly.

Make your DIY furniture cleaning solution

Use a duster to remove excess dust and dirt first before cleaning wood furniture. Then, combine 2 cups of warm water and ½ cup of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake well to mix the solution. You can add a few drops of your favourite essential oil if you can’t stand the smell of vinegar, and spray the mixture onto your wood furniture as a DIY cleaning solution.

When trying these tips, it’s always important to consider the type of wood you’re working with. Hardwoods, like oak or teak, are scratch-resistant so you can clean these more aggressively. However, pine, cedar, or other softer wood, should be cleaned gently. For more DIY cleaning solutions, check out this article.

The reason the chairs look good is because theyve been sanded and oiled. Could have used soapy water to scrub first. 🙄
