Uber Eats now requires a minimum spend for groceries

The cost of living has been on a steep rise in recent years. We understand that many of us are feeling the pinch, and we’ve been on the lookout for any tips and tricks that could help bring down those ever-increasing expenses.

Lately, one of the most innovative sources to help us save some money has been online grocery shopping.

We don’t have to leave our homes to do the groceries and, depending on the service, there are no extra costs like service charges and shipping fees.

Sadly though, one of the biggest online grocery platforms, Uber Eats, just announced a new fee that will be applied to their customers’ purchases.

The brand has revealed they are introducing a minimum spend for customers looking to purchase groceries online.

Those who want to purchase less than $10 worth of groceries will be hit with a $2.99 charge.

The new fee will be introduced in the app and added on top of any delivery costs and service fees. It will also be applied to people ordering items from supermarkets, bottle shops, and convenience stores.

However, Uber Eats claimed that this doesn’t apply to takeaway purchases from cafes and restaurants.

'As the majority of people are already spending more than $10 on items each time they order from a store on our platform, it’s not a change we anticipate will be felt by many–but it will allow us to operate a more efficient platform,' the company said via a spokesperson.

When Uber Eats offered their customers to shop at Woolworths, Aussies had access to grocery delivery in the app since 2021.

Uber Eats has also partnered with Coles in April this year, so shoppers can have an option where to buy their needs between supermarket giants.

This comes after a new report revealed an unintended consequence of embracing online grocery shopping and takeaways. According to an investigation, customers are paying more for their favourite meals because restaurants and food chains are increasing their prices to offset the fees charged by platforms such as Uber Eats.

In response to the high fees, both small establishments and large multinational restaurant chains have opted to increase their prices on delivery apps. You can read more about this story here.

We’re hoping that Uber Eats rescinds the new minimum spend requirement, but until then, we’d advise our members to be mindful of any additional charges that befall their grocery orders.

Sorry, will never use "UBER" for anything. Such a rip-off.
