TV presenter confirms heart-wrenching battle with cancer and shares impact on daily life

Life often throws us curveballs, and how we handle them can redefine our perspectives and priorities.

This is undoubtedly true for one Sunrise star, who recently shared an emotional update on her cancer diagnosis and its profound impact on her daily life.

Her story is not just one of struggle but also of gratitude and resilience.

During a poignant speech at Marie Claire's International Women's Day luncheon in Sydney, Edwina Bartholomew opened up about her journey since being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer.

She recounted the initial shock and the subsequent period of adjustment, revealing how the diagnosis has prompted her to slow down and reassess what's truly important.

'I was fortunate that I had a month where I knew about it before I told everyone. I had this experience without having to go through the trauma of chemotherapy,' Edwina shared with the audience.

She described her condition as a 'gift' that has put things into perspective, allowing her to continue with most activities in her daily life without the intense experience of being 'in' cancer and absorbed by it.

Edwina's diagnosis is considered a 'mild' form of leukaemia, often manageable without undergoing chemotherapy and dealing with the disease's more severe symptoms.

This has been a silver lining for her, as she has maintained a semblance of normalcy, even forgetting to go for a blood test because the illness is not always at the forefront of her mind.

The TV presenter, who shared two young children, Molly and Tom, with her husband Neil Varcoe, has been candid about the challenges of navigating life with cancer.

'I haven't had to tell my young kids because I still look the same. It's been a real re-think in slowing myself down,' she said.

Edwina's journey to diagnosis was serendipitous, with her co-star Natalie Barr crucially encouraging her to get checked.

After a series of tests for unrelated concerns came back clear, routine blood tests revealed levels that were out of the ordinary, leading to her diagnosis.

The veteran TV star bravely shared her diagnosis live on air in September, emphasising that while it was a shock, the type of leukaemia she has can be treated with a daily tablet.

'If I can take care of myself, I will be completely fine,' she reassured viewers, even as she fought back tears.

Edwina's story is a testament to the importance of regular health check-ups and listening to our bodies.

It also reminds us of the advancements in medical treatments that have significantly improved the prognosis for people with CML, allowing many to achieve remission and live full lives.
