TV Legend Denise Drysdale battles with nerve disorder

Last month, television personality Denise Drysdale was rushed to the hospital after a case of a rare nerve disorder.

Kristine Tarbert of Yahoo! Lifestyle has reported in an article that the Studio 10 star experienced ‘unspeakable agony’ according to her son Peter Milne who has recently shared an update regarding his mum’s condition.

Peter spoke to Drysdale’s Studio 10 co-hosts on Monday, and the boy has confirmed that his 72-year-old mother is suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia.

"Mum has likened it to a shocking sort of pain right at the back of her eyes, sending electric shocks," he added.

"It comes in waves, and [had] little triggers like being on the phone, texting, laughing, anything where she needed to use her brain is just sending these terrible debilitating pains."

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that is often described as a sharp shooting pain or an electric shock on a person’s lower side of the face and jaw. It affects the trigeminal or 5th cranial nerve, and usually happens in short, unpredictable attacks that can last from a few seconds to about 2 minutes.

According to Peter, Denise goes to a local clinic several days a week to help ease the pain by undergoing ‘high intensity acupuncture’ and it helps.

He added that his mother is successfully, albeit slowly, trying to get back into her routine. “She managed to have a nice little plate of spaghetti the other day and she would not have eaten for over a week. She was trying to spoon little bits of yoghurt and couldn't swallow.”

Even then, Peter is still thankful the twice-awarded Gold Logie winner has not lost her sense of humour, and is not letting the illness get the best of her.

She is no stranger to these trials as this is not the first time Denise found herself battling for her health.

In 2019, she went on a difficult journey of dealing with a series of health problems, starting with her knee injury which required a knee replacement. After the surgery, she suffered from formed blood clots in her knee and vision loss caused by a detached retina.

Denise also received antibiotics for infected lumps on her head, and on New Year's Eve, she discovered a breast lump. Thankfully, this turned out to be a cyst.

In late 2020, the star also broke her shoulder in an incident while filming Channel 7’s mini-golf series, Holey Moley.

Studio 10’s entertainment reporter Craig Bennett also mentioned that he had been speaking to Drysdale multiple times a day and that she’s on her way to recovery.

“I know we all share in wishing our Denise Drysdale the speediest of recoveries. We need our regular dose of Ding Dong [Drysdale’s nickname].”
