Remember when a pack of ‘Turf’ or a pouch of rolling tobacco was a familiar sight? Dads, uncles, and granddads would roll their own with Tally Ho papers or pull a cork-tipped cigarette from a little 10-pack. Did you ever use them yourself? Share your memories here.

Turf ciggies were if memory serves me correctly 1/6d for ten why pay that much when I could get a packet of ten Old Chums for 1/-. Ahh those were the days. Glad I gave up over 50 years ago.

Yeah you’d be dead as a dodo otherwise ☹️

I can remember a small shop near a school selling Turf cigarettes but in 1947 many people couldn't afford to buy a packet of 10. So he had some small paper bags which held one Turf cigarette and one match (Swan Vesta - which you could strike on a wall) for one penny.
The good old days eh!

I remember Turf not as a smoker but as a youngster who collected and swapped cigarette pack covers. As kids we would often play different games where the winner won cigarette pack covers. Some of the brands I remember were; Capstan, 3 Threes, Craven A , Peter Jackson, Cant remember any more at the moment.

I would go and buy my fathers 1/2 oz of Old Holborn tobacco and a packet of Rizzla red cigarette papers, then using his cigarette making machine I would make his week's supply of 'coffin nails' as he called them. He eventually died from lung cancer and as a result I have never smoked cigarettes.

Lucky Strike, Rothmans, PallMall, Camal, Peter Stuyvesant, Dunhill, gave up 32 years ago, was a big winner with pack covers, we used to cut them in half vertically, more chances of winning, those were the worry free days:)

A reminder!!! By law you are no longer allowed to show photos of tobacco products
No.

Unless it can be proven that SDC is promoting the sale and use of tobacco products then the photo is legal.

From the TOBACCO ADVERTISING PROHIBITION ACT 1992 - Section 10 - Meaning of "publish a tobacco advertisement"

(5) For the purposes of this Act, the publication of an acknowledgment of
assistance or support does not amount to the publication of a tobacco
advertisement if it complies with regulations made for the purposes of this
subsection that permit the publication of such acknowledgments.

Mum smoked Turf corked tip. Dad smoked Craven A. My sister and I shopped for groceries Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school. Mum was agoraphobic so it was up to sis and myself. We used to buy mum's ciggies when we were 8 and 10 years old. She did eventually quit, but years later.
