Towering Inferno

I met a past love when she was working behind the bar at a bistro. I was with a friend/client for a business lunch.

He asked her to make a Towering Inferno. She'd never heard of it.

It consisted of something like 6 coloured liqueurs, one on top of the other, in a large shot glass. The various consistencies ensured they form a rainbow in the glass, similar to the image in this article.

It took ages to make and to her horror, 5 seconds to skull. "Another one please" we said. Two were enough.

I later got her number, dated her, married her and we had two beautiful boys.

So, Towering Inferno has very good memories for me.

My first job after leaving School was a hotel managerial apprenticeship at Savoy Plaza Hotel in Melbourne, one of the hotel's employees was a fellow named Bob M (PRIVACY) who was recognised within the industry as one of the best cocktail barmen in the country....he had developed his own 'rainbow' cocktail which he made with about six different liquers in a traditional very small liqueur glass....the tiniest of all glasses in the bar....it took him a little while to make with the utmost care and precision with his vast knowledge which liqueurs would sit one atop the other without combining with each other....he won many cocktail making awards for his drink and looking at the finished result in such a very small glass with such care and perfection it really left many customers speechless and also many who really didn't want to drink it in the end because of the skill involved in making it and its amazing beauty. A truly remarkable barman overall and a wonderful person to boot.
