The cause of death was not disclosed.

For many film enthusiasts, Hill's face is one that brings back a flood of cinematic memories.

He first gained prominence in the United Kingdom with his role in the 1982 series Boys from the Blackstuff, a poignant drama that captured the struggles of unemployed men during the Thatcher era.

This series not only showcased Hill's acting prowess but also highlighted the social issues of the time, resonating deeply with viewers.

However, it was his portrayal of characters in two of the most epic film sagas that brought him international acclaim.

In James Cameron's Titanic, Hill embodied the role of Captain Edward Smith, a man burdened by the weight of the unfolding disaster. His haunting performance culminated in a powerful final scene, where he stood alone, gripping the ship's helm as the icy waters surged in.

Bernard Hill's versatility also shone through in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where he played Theoden, King of Rohan.

His character's journey from a manipulated ruler to a valiant leader in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was nothing short of inspiring. Hill's ability to convey strength, vulnerability, and transformation made King Theoden one of the most compelling characters in the series.

His career spanned a variety of genres, with roles in films such as Gandhi, Shirley Valentine, and The Scorpion King, showcasing his range and dedication to his craft.

Hill's agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed his passing, and the tributes have been pouring in.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, praised Hill's remarkable career, saying, 'He blazed a trail across the screen, and his long-lasting career filled with iconic and remarkable roles is a testament to his incredible talent.'

‘We love him. He was intrepid, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was beautiful,’ Sean Astin, a Lord of the Rings actor, stated.

Writer of Boys from the Blackstuff, Alan Bleasdale, described Hill’s passing as a ‘great loss and also a great surprise’.

‘It was an astonishing, mesmeric performance—Bernard gave everything to that and you can see it in all the scenes. He became Yosser Hughes,’ Alan added.

‘I was desperate to work with him. Everything he did—his whole procedure for working, the manner in which he worked and his performance was everything that you could ever wish for.’

‘You always felt that Bernard would live forever. He had a great strength, physically and of personality,’ he said.

‘An absolutely phenomenal actor who stole the scene in every movie. He will be missed,’ one fan wrote.
