TikTok user debunks popular cleaning hack that claims to leave bathroom mirrors with a streak-free shine

If you’re an avid fan of cleaning hacks, then you might have heard about how shaving cream as a cleaning solution is making the rounds on social media lately. Although it’s proven to freshen up certain things at home, its ability to clean bathroom mirrors has been put to the test by one TikTok user.
Stephanie begins by squeezing a generous amount of shaving cream on a cloth and wiping it all over her mirror. She then flips the cloth so that the unused side wipes the substance off completely.

Initially, her mirror looks spotless from afar. However, Stephanie explains that there’s a catch to it that you’ll only be able to spot if you’re close enough.
“From a distance, this mirror looks clean. But up close, you can see that there is a film on top of this mirror – plus my light is refracting off this mirror in a weird way!”
Stephanie zooms in on the mirror’s surface with a ring light behind her, revealing streaks and smudges left behind by the shaving cream. She picks up her microfibre cloth once more in an attempt to wipe off the smudge, but to no avail.
“I'm actually not surprised that shaving cream made a poor mirror cleaner, and that's because it's essentially whipped soap with some lubricants in it!” she explained.
“I just lubricated and soaped up that mirror, which is great if you want an anti-fog mirror, but if you want a streak-free mirror I would skip the shaving cream.”
Instead of shaving cream, Stephanie recommends spraying distilled water and wiping it off with a microfibre cloth. She concluded her video by asking her followers for their thoughts on shaving cream as a mirror cleaner, and the majority sided with her.

“Yep! I tried it and it does not work.” one user responded in the comments.
“Shaving cream is so much more expensive than glass cleaner also!” another pointed out.
A few argued that the shaving cream hack wasn’t meant for a streak-free shine, but for a fog-free mirror instead saying: “Shaving cream is supposed to keep the mirror from clouding up from hot shower moisture.”
To which Stephanie responded: “That does work. The trade-off is having a dull mirror.”
Shaving cream might not be ideal for cleaning mirrors, but boy does it work wonders for freshening up toilet areas! So, if you’ve got a can of unused shaving cream hanging around, you may want to read about how you can achieve fragrant toilet areas using shaving cream here.
