Thousands of shoppers shocked as Woolworths claw back 'mistaken' prizes

Winning prizes in promos is always a fun experience.

What happens if that stroke of luck is an error that also affects your fellow shoppers?

Woolworths New Zealand found itself in a pickle after a blunder, which led thousands of shoppers on.

The mix-up occurred during Woolworths' 'Big Night In' promotion, where loyal customers could win 4,000 reward points equivalent to NZ$30 (A$27).

To enter, shoppers needed to boost the offer in their Everyday Rewards App and purchase three participating products.

Winners were drawn weekly, which made it exciting for those looking to save a bit extra.

However, shoppers' excitement turned to confusion when an email was sent to around 80,000 customers congratulating them on their win.

The message, which was supposed to reach around 1,000 customers, read:

'Nice one! You've won 4000 Everyday Rewards points from our Big Night In prize draw. Your $30 Everyday Rewards voucher will be added to your Everyday Rewards account within the next three days and will be ready for you to redeem in-store or online.'

'An incorrect audience selection meant that it was sent to other customers mistakenly,' a Woolworths spokesperson confirmed.

The company immediately addressed the mistake, contacted affected customers and offered 500 Everyday Rewards points as a gesture of apology.

'We will be undertaking a full review of this incident to understand what we can do to prevent this happening in future,' they concluded.

While this may soften the blow, it certainly raised questions about the reliability of promotional communications and the safeguards to prevent such errors.

In light of recent events, Woolworths Australia confirmed that this error impacted no Aussie shoppers.

Nevertheless, it's a reminder to maintain a healthy scepticism about too-good-to-be-true winnings.

Promotions like the 'Big Night In' can be a fantastic way to stretch our dollars further, but they also need to be managed with precision to maintain customer confidence.

If you have received a promotion or prize, feel free to contact the retailer's customer service for confirmation.
