This woman was just minutes from death. Can you spot the eerie detail in her beach photo?

For some, taking a leisurely walk along the beach is one of life's simple pleasures.

It's a great way to get some fresh air, get in some light physical activity, and just relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

However, one recent beachgoer's peaceful walk turned into a matter of life and death.

Natalie Stevens was taking her daily walk with her dog along a beach when suddenly, her hair began to stand on end.

Thinking it was just a weird case of static electricity, she took a photo and posted it on social media, saying she felt a 'tingly feeling' in her head as thunder roared in the distance.

Little did she know that this small incident was actually a warning sign.

It was telling her something dangerous was about to occur.

If your hair starts standing on end like this, it’s a sign of impending lightning and a clear warning sign that you are in imminent danger—something some people online didn’t fail to underscore in replies to her post.

‘FYI, if this happens again it’s a signal that lighting is going to strike you.’

‘You are very lucky, as this is a very sure sign that you are potentially about to be struck by lightning,’ another said.

‘That’s a sign of being in danger of being struck by lightning! You were very lucky that you weren’t,’ a third agreed.

This phenomenon is known as 'electrostatic charging' and occurs when a high voltage storm’s 'negative charges build up' on the ground.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology says that if you're lucky enough to spot this sign you should move immediately.

Another telling sign of impending lightning is when nearby rocks and fences start ‘buzzing’.

If this happens, you should immediately seek shelter in a metal-bodied vehicle or a solid building.

Avoid open-walled shelters (especially fabric tents!) and never take shelter under small groups of or single trees.

Nighttime storms also provide an extra warning sign: you may spot a 'blue glow' if an object is about to be struck.

Weather experts also advise you to drop to your knees and bend forward if you spot your hair standing on end–but never lie flat on the ground, as wet ground is a good conductor of electricity.

Many users, much like Ms Stevens, were unaware of the meaning of your hair standing on end outdoors, with one saying:

‘Well, this was very educational! I had never heard of that!’
