This woman only used Kmart beauty products for a week—are they worth it?
Many people had their fair share of disappointment trying cheap beauty products from lower-priced ranges.
So when Bianca Soldani heard of Kmart’s beauty range gaining popularity among shoppers, she immediately thought to test them out herself.
Kmart’s beauty products—the OXX makeup line and Anko skincare range—were praised for their quality, with many fans describing them as ‘unreal’.
And with prices as low as $10 for a contouring kit, $3 for a sponger, $6 for a serum and lipsticks for just $2, who could resist?
But are these products just riding the wave of Kmart's general hype, or do these inexpensive items work and last?
To find out, Bianca put her preferred beauty routine on the back burner to try Kmart’s makeup and skincare products for a full week to give us all a brutally honest review on which items we should (or shouldn't) be buying.
Bianca tested ten different OXX products for the makeup line and built three different makeup looks for day-to-day life. Bianca said she was pleasantly surprised by the products she used.
‘My overall opinion was that they’re actually surprisingly good for what you’re paying,’ she said.
Among the ten products, two products received ‘Great’ reviews from Bianca: the Blush Balm ‘Candy’ ($6) and the Ultra Fine Brow Pencil ‘Light’ ($4).
She admitted that she liked the blush and is still using it. ‘The colour was lovely and became quite subtle when blended in—making it great for a glowy, natural makeup look.’
Bianca also said the brow pencil has a ‘nice shade’ and is lighter than her brows.
‘It also had a very thin tip, which was actually amazing and meant I never overdid my brows. I will definitely be repurchasing this,’ she stated.
However, three products received low scores from Bianca. She described the Highlight Stick ‘Gold’ ($4): ‘I found the really pearlescent finish on this stick just made me look sweaty.’
Bianca thought the Active Lash Waterproof Mascara ($4) was ‘terrible’. She claimed in her review: ‘I would honestly rather wear no mascara than this mascara. It didn’t add volume or length and just made my lashes look sticky in places.’
And last on the list is the Plumping Lip Gloss ‘Nude’ ($2.25), which left her ‘sorely disappointed’.
‘There was definitely an uncomfortable tingle that started soon after I applied the gloss, but I didn’t see any noticeable plumping effect at all,’ she described.
As for the Anko Skincare range, Bianca only bought three products with Hyaluronic Acid. The first is the Moisture Hydrate Hydration Mask 50ml - 2% Hyaluronic Acid, retailing for $6.
Using the mask, she said: ‘It didn’t really feel like anything on, just a bit cool, and it didn’t freeze my face like a clay mask.’
‘It left my skin feeling nice and soft, so I’ll continue using it,’ she added.
The second product on the skincare line is the Moisturise Hydrate Cream Cleanser 150ml - Hyaluronic Acid, which is also priced at $6.
‘I was able to wash off all the Kmart makeup products after two cleanses with a face washer. The only thing it didn’t cut through was the waterproof mascara, which needed proper makeup remover,’ Bianca stated about the cleanser.
And the last one, Moisturise Hydrate Serum 30ml - 2% Hyaluronic Acid, is also at a $6 price point. Bianca admitted it was ‘too hard to tell if the serum actually did anything’.
‘Like the cleanser, it left my skin feeling a little tacky, but it wasn’t tingly or anything, which I found surprising considering my face is always covered in micro cuts thanks to my one-year-old who hates cutting his nails,’ she explained.
Bianca said that one week is not long enough to see the full results of the skincare products, but conceded that the fact she ‘didn’t break out in hives was a good sign’.
In the end, she found that, while a couple of products could be best consigned to the bin, other items were surprisingly good for how inexpensive they were.
Plus, all products have been certified cruelty-free according to the international program Leaping Bunny, so it's not just a budget buy, but an ethical choice, too.
