This new trend has drivers on edge—why it’s raising safety concerns, especially for women

Imagine returning to your car and finding an envelope tucked beneath the wiper.

Inside: a printed photo of your vehicle, clearly snapped while you weren’t looking—complete with someone lurking behind a bush.

It’s not a prank, not a fine… but it’s definitely unexpected.

Melbourne drivers have been left unsettled—and, in some cases, amused—by a peculiar new trend that’s popped up across the city’s streets.

A social media user known as thelowerupperclass has revealed that he wanders local neighbourhoods photographing what he considers ‘cool cars’, prints out the snaps, and leaves them on windscreens as a surprise ‘gift’ to the vehicle’s owner.

He insisted the act was a way of giving back to the car community, stating: ‘I only take pics of cars I think the owners would appreciate,’ and added that he targets vehicles with visible modifications or signs of passionate ownership.

Still, not everyone saw it as a friendly gesture.

‘Bro someone gonna think they’re being stalked,’ warned one user.

Another was more direct: ‘You’re gonna get your lights knocked out.’

Many female users expressed serious discomfort, saying the anonymous act would feel threatening.

‘As a woman, I would feel EXTREMELY scared and intimidated,’ said one commenter.

Others wondered if it might be a passive-aggressive move from someone in the area.

‘I’d straight throw it away,’ one user wrote.

‘Just some busybody playing hall monitor,’ added another.

Then there were the jokes—some light-hearted, others cutting.

‘Last thing I need when I’m parked outside my mistress’s place,’ said one commenter.

‘Parking inspectors typically charge for this!’ quipped another.

Some criticised the composition of the photos themselves.

‘It’s so much worse that the picture literally shows the bushes you’re hiding behind,’ one noted.

‘The car only takes up 1/9th of the frame.’

Still, a few saw the humour and charm behind the idea, even offering up their car models in hopes of being ‘spotted’ next.

While some may view it as art or appreciation, others see it as a creepy crossing of boundaries—raising the question: when does a ‘nice gesture’ go too far?

If finding a mystery photo on your windscreen makes you question what’s happening in your neighbourhood, you’re not alone.

Whether it’s unusual gestures or unexpected hazards, it’s clear that our roads and car parks are full of surprises—some more serious than others.

One recent report looked at where drivers are most at risk of accidents across the country, and the results may prompt you to rethink your next trip.
