This Kmart tip for organising medicine is dividing the internet - find out why

As we age, many of us require medication to keep our health in check. Whether it’s to manage a chronic condition or simply to keep our bodies functioning properly, medication is one of the best ways to make sure we can stay happy and healthy for as long as possible.

For some of us, this can be a hard pill to swallow (literally and figuratively). We may not like the idea of having to rely on drugs to stay healthy, but the fact is that they can be lifesavers. Maintenance medication can help us stay active and independent as we age, and that's something we should all be striving for.

Keeping this in mind, taking multiple prescription drugs daily can also be very confusing and overwhelming – especially if you have trouble remembering when you took your last dose or where you put your pills in the first place!

If this sounds familiar, then this trick may be a solution for you!

One Kmart shopper shared how the $17 photo storage boxes from the retailer help her organise the medicines in her cupboard and let her and other family members readily see what they need to take.

Sharing on the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia, the mum said that the simple tip helped her save space.

'We have adult kids and we know our dosages. Expiry is on the sheets and this works for our family,' she in the captions of the pictures she posted.

'We all know how much dosage of these pills to take, but I did cut some of the boxes and put them inside as well, merely based on the meds each family member needs.'

She also claimed that she labelled the storage boxes with the expiration date and batch numbers from the medication sheets.

Other users commenting on her post praised the suggestion and said it would be an ideal space-saver.

One user wrote: 'This is a great idea.'

'Oh, I am sooooo doing this! Thank you for posting,' another said.

Some claimed that they've had the same setup for years.

'I did the same thing with our meds. Great space saver!' one person shared.

However, not everyone seemed to be on board with the mum as they called her out for the possible dangers of the hack.

One comment read: 'Be careful, I recently found out that we are legally required to keep prescribed medicines in the box and/or keep the prescription handy.'

'Try to include scripts in the cases.'

Another chimed in: 'Codeine or any other S8 medication is meant to be locked into a safe with a code or something similar. It is the law if you are keeping these medications within your home.'

'Not always a good idea to remove from packaging as the instructions on how and when to take them are on the boxes so this probably should be removed or taken down before somebody overdoses,' a third said.

'If you want to keep doing this, you might want to add notes about them.'

For our members who are looking forward to trying this, you may want to check out your state's laws regarding medicine storage to prevent any issues in the long run.

Others jumped into the mum's defence, writing: 'Don’t worry about the negative comments. Pretty obvious that anything liquid or in a bottle wouldn’t go in there.'

'Any special directions or labels could be easily placed inside and most sheets of meds have the expiry on them. Anything that doesn’t fit could be put into another box and would still look neater than what you started with. Great idea!'

Key Takeaways

  • Kmart has a clever tip for organising your medicine tablets – use a photo storage box to keep everything sorted.
  • This is a great space-saving solution and will help you to keep track of your medication more easily.
  • As long as you keep the original packaging and prescription information handy, there's no reason why this shouldn't work perfectly well for most people.

The mum also confirmed that she properly reads the labels in the medicine boxes before storing them in her container.

She also noted that she cuts out the special instructions indicated in the boxes of the medicine and places them in the container so her family members could read them before taking anything.

Again, we reiterate that there are proper storage and legal requirements for some medications. So before you start cutting your medications and placing them in boxes, double-check first if it's okay.

So, there you have it, folks! How do you store your medication at home? Better yet, do you find this storage idea at Kmart useful? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

What a fantastic 💡 💡 idea

I have something similar with things like bandaids, antiseptic, and other first aid items. They are labelled my first aid kit. It has most things I need in it. A lady on Etsy makes them to your specifications. However, I agree there are some things I wouldn't put in it as they are specifically designed for different storage requirements. And I keep it in a cupboard where, should children come in, they cannot reach it.First aid kit.jpg

I get all my medications blister packed at the chemist, they also deliver them to me every two weeks so I don't have to worry about keeping on top of things. I don't have any over the counter medicines other than for indigestion and that just lives in a high kitchen cupboard. I don't use any over the counter pain pills, waste of time really when I'm on morphine patches for pain. ;)
