This is insane’: Aussie mum’s $25 grocery haul stuns shoppers

The rising cost of groceries has left many Aussie families searching for ways to stretch their budgets further.

While discounts and specials can help, some have uncovered even bigger savings through little-known initiatives making a real difference.

One mum’s recent discovery has stunned shoppers, proving that with the right know-how, it’s possible to score a trolley full of groceries for a fraction of the usual price.

A Gold Coast mum-of-three was thrilled after managing to fill her trolley with groceries worth hundreds of dollars for just $25.

Sharing her experience on social media, Lacie revealed how she discovered The Good Food Shop, a budget-friendly store run by the non-profit charity Lighthouse Care.

The initiative aimed to help Australians save on food costs by offering heavily discounted groceries through its stores and home delivery service.

Shoppers could pick up a prepacked trolley containing essentials such as fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, pasta, rice, eggs, drinks, and snacks at discounts of up to 70 per cent off retail prices.

Lighthouse Care partnered with organisations like SecondBite and Food Bank Australia to make food more accessible while reducing waste.

While some products were past their best-before dates, they remained safe to eat, though the quality might have been slightly reduced.

‘I paid $25 for everything on this table,’ Lacie said in her video while showing off her massive grocery haul from Lighthouse Care in Loganholme, Brisbane.

‘It’s called a $25 trolley, and you get all of this every single day of the week, except Sunday, because they’re not open on Sundays.’

She walked her followers through her purchases, highlighting a crate filled with bread products, including English muffins and loaves, which she planned to freeze.

‘There’s probably $30 worth of bread here, so I can’t complain. Now everything else in the trolley is basically free,’ she added, explaining that she had already got her money’s worth.

Her trolley also contained fresh produce such as carrots, broccoli, lettuce, potatoes, onions, and apples, along with pantry staples like butter, eggs, chicken stock, ramen noodles, and pasta.

Among the items were some unexpected treats, including gourmet peanut brittle, chocolate custard, espresso mousse, and soft drinks.

She also received two frozen ready-to-eat meals that she planned to serve to her children.

‘This is insane,’ she said after taking in the sheer volume of items covering most of her kitchen bench.

Lacie mentioned that she had visited Lighthouse Care ‘so many times’ and had never received a bad trolley, noting that the prepacked selection changed daily.

She explained that the store was open to everyone, not just those in financial hardship, and encouraged more people to shop there to help keep the initiative running.

Aussie households spent an average of $168 per week on groceries, according to a Canstar Blue survey from July 2024, which totalled nearly $728 a month or $8,736 a year.

The comments section of her video was filled with praise for the initiative, with one person saying Lighthouse Care had ‘saved’ their family in recent months.

Others called the charity ‘incredible’, ‘amazing’, and ‘great value’.

Some people wished similar stores were available in their areas, with one claiming: ‘Meanwhile, in Sydney/Melbourne, that would cost $867.’

‘Wish Perth had this,’ another person wrote.
