From humble beginnings at a Brisbane farmers market to the pinnacle of pastry perfection, OMG! Decadent Donuts has risen to sweet success, recently crowned Australia's Best Gourmet Doughnut at the Baking Industry Trade Show.
This accolade is no small feat, especially considering the fierce competition in the world of artisanal baked goods.
The Baking Industry Trade Show, hosted in Melbourne by the Baking Association of Australia (BAA), is a prestigious event where the crème de la crème of the baking world showcase their culinary creations.
It's a place where innovation meets tradition and where the best of the best are recognised for their contributions to the industry.
OMG! Decadent Donuts didn't just take home one award; they dominated the Best Gourmet Doughnut category, securing not only the top spot but also second and third place.
The star of the show was the Spicy Ranga doughnut, an adventurous concoction that tantalises the taste buds with a bold mix of ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, and cloves.
Following closely behind, the Dusty Queen doughnut captured second place with its zesty orange and cinnamon flavours, while a rich coffee-flavoured doughnut took home the bronze.
OMG! Decadent Donuts said it was ‘hugely proud’ of their achievement, especially given the strong competition from ‘normal’ doughnuts.
‘What’s made these awards particularly sweet is that Baking Association Australia awards are ‘blind tasted’, meaning the judging panel of top chefs had no idea the winning doughnuts were free from gluten, dairy, egg, wheat, yeast, nuts and sulphates, vegan and also 100 per cent natural,’ it said.
The journey of OMG! Decadent Donuts, founded in 2018 by restaurateur David Moore, is a story of passion and perseverance.
Moore, who himself has to navigate food allergies, and his partner, who cannot consume gluten or dairy, worked with a food technologist to develop a doughnut mix that would be safe and enjoyable for as many people as possible.
Their mission to create a sense of belonging through food has resonated with customers and critics alike.
‘Research indicates that people with strict dietary requirements often face feelings of exclusion and anxiety,’ OMG! Decadent Donuts said.
‘By offering a product that just about everyone can enjoy regardless of dietary requirements fosters inclusivity and belonging.’
