This family shows us how to make delicious meals using a rice cooker for under $5

In these strange times, it seems like a fever dream to be able to come up with meals that are not only budget-friendly but are also easy to make and nutritious given that the costs of essentials are at an all-time high.

But don't fret! Did you know that rice cookers can be used to make certain basic recipes without costing a fortune?

Well, there's no denying that some of us love rice cooker meals. They're quick, easy, and usually pretty tasty. Plus, you can make a bunch of different dishes in them, so they're great for meal prepping!

Just take a look at this one family who came up with a quick rice cooker meal using ingredients that only cost them under $5.

You read that right, folks! The family-of-four, better known for their username @vietfamily120622, has captured the attention of thousands of social media users after revealing that they managed to feed every member with a meal prepared using Coles items costing $4.56 and cooked it in under 15 minutes.

Sharing the inventive recipe on TikTok, the family shows their grocery shop haul, which consisted of baby potatoes, carrots (from the 'imperfect' range), frozen peas and a handful of thin Frankfurts.

The breakdown of all the ingredients and their exact costs are as follows:

  • Jasmine rice 400g - $1.20
  • Sausage 150g - $1.26
  • 2 carrots - $0.69
  • Peas 100g - $0.22
  • Potato - $0.33
  • 1 egg - $0.36
  • Olive oil, seasoning, soy sauce - $0.50

The video then shows the mum dicing the ingredients into small, even pieces, and placing them in a rice cooker on top of some rice. An egg is cracked into the centre of the dish and the seasonings are sprinkled on top.

Next, the mum sets the rice cooker to its basic ‘on’ setting and lets the meal cook.

Once the timer goes off, the mum stirs the rice and the ingredients together using some chopsticks. The result is an impressive-looking dish resembling fried rice.

TikTok users applauded the family for the tip, with many saying that they would be rushing to the nearest store to nab some rice cookers.

One user wrote: 'You've done it again! I must get myself a rice cooker.'

'A lot of people believe rice cookers are a one-purpose-only appliance but they are so versatile!' another said.

A third chimed in: 'I didn't know u could do that in rice cooker omg.'

Others said that they were keen on trying the recipe, with one mum saying:'Great idea, I have to give it a go!'

While it is possible to cut down on your grocery bills, it is also very important to ensure that you and your loved ones are getting all the nutrients that you need, especially during this time when contagious diseases, such as COVID-19 and monkeypox, are threatening our health. This recipe just proved that you can incorporate nutritious vegetables into your meals even when on a budget.

We're definitely looking forward to trying this recipe. How about you? Will you give this dish a go?

That looks dry and boring and there's not enough protein in it for one person let alone four.

Surely there's a cup or two of water to cook the rice, although I watched the video very carefully it was difficult to tell.;)

Doesn’t the water

Doesn’t the water go into the bottom section, causing the ingredients to be steamed?
If you mean the ultimate bottom section (underneath the main section where she is placing all those dry ingredients) then daresay you would probably fry your rice cooker!!
