When planning a holiday, it’s tempting to get swept up in the promise of glitzy pictures, beautiful hotel shots, and perfect reviews.
But this presents a danger that could haunt any unsuspecting traveller.
Take the experience of this traveller from the UK, Hatty Morton, who recently received an unpleasant surprise at her Bali holiday Airbnb rental.
She shared on social media that when she arrived at what was supposed to be a luxurious villa, decorated with modern amenities and overlooking lush greenery, she opened the front door to a different sight altogether.
Ms Morton showed the difference between the promised villa (which was admittedly breathtakingly beautiful) and the reality. The second shot featured grey walls in a dank-looking room with dusty floors and dishevelled furniture––far different from what was promised.
Users quickly expressed their shock, with one saying: ‘That is just terrifying!’
‘Someone for sure used AI to make it seem wholesome,’ another said.
‘The way my jaw hit the floor when I saw those pictures of the real one,’ a third shared.
While one user suggested: ‘Always check the reviews and never stay somewhere with none.’

Sadly, this isn’t the first time that something like this has happened—other horror stories of travellers have also been widely shared online.
For instance, earlier this year a Canadian woman recounted her experience of discovering a hidden camera in a power outlet inside the bathroom of an Airbnb they were staying in with friends.
She initially thought her friend was being dramatic when her friend expressed feeling ‘paranoid’ and checking ‘every shower head, all the picture frames, doorknobs, everywhere in the house for a camera’. That’s until they found a camera inside the bathroom which they had been using the night before.
Moreover, countless tourists in Bali are reportedly falling for the money-exchange scam.
One unfortunate Australian traveller fell prey to this popular money-changing scam in Bali.
As she explained, the scam involved unscrupulous money changers pulling a quick sleight of hand while counting out the traveller’s exchanged money.
‘Counted the money three times and then later in the day, my driver said “check money now”, and I couldn’t believe it, it was much less,' she recounted.
