One particularly resourceful shopper revealed he had been stacking up Qantas frequent flyer points by using the Woolworths Everyday Rewards scheme.
'I pretty much buy gift cards for everything at Woolworths and then you use the rewards points to pay for all your international travel,' he said.
'You don't pay to fly, it's pretty good.'
Woolworths’ Everyday Rewards program, which operates in Australia and New Zealand, allows members to earn points when shopping at Woolworths, Big W, BWS, MyDeal, Everyday Market, and with partners like Ampol and Origin Energy.
Through a partnership with Qantas, members can convert 2,000 Everyday Rewards points into 1,000 frequent flyer points.
The young man’s method of converting rewards points into free flights left fellow social media users in awe.
‘Wait. So, if I buy gift cards and use my rewards points. Then buy my groceries with the gift cards I can use my rewards points again?’ one user wrote.
Others quickly confirmed the trick.
'Scan rewards card when buying a gift card, scan rewards card when using a gift card to buy groceries, (then) get rewards points twice for the same money,’ another explained.
‘This has just changed my life,’ a third commented.
Occasionally, Woolworths offers bonus points on selected gift cards.
During these promotions, customers can earn 10 or 20 bonus Everyday Rewards points per dollar spent on eligible gift cards.
With 1,000 Qantas points valued around $20 for flight bookings, this strategy can add up quickly.
For example, a flight from Sydney to Singapore in business class could be booked for just 68,400 points.
